Alexis Bledel in Violet & Daisy at US theaters on Friday!

Arrietty and RoryReleased in the US on Friday is Violet and Daisy, starring Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) as Violet.  Taking her Sin City role a step further, she and Saoirse Ronan play a pair of teenage assassins taking on New York criminals.  They take on a job targeting a mysterious loner (James Gandolfini) who leads them into some twisty-turny plot.

Written and directed by Geoffrey Fletcher (Academy Award winning screenwriter for Precious) comes:

“a mesmerizing hybrid of New York City crime fable and existential coming-of-age drama. In VIOLET & DAISY teenage kicks match wits with adult-world turmoil, placing three wounded souls into a line of fire none expected – themselves.”

I couldn’t stop wondering how old Alexis is supposed to be (the pat-a-cake scene made me cringe) and her grip on those guns looks a little precarious but the movie looks like fun.  Made in 2011, it’s encouraging that it has a theatrical release.

Will you be seeing it?  If you’ve already seen it, I’d love to know what you thought.

Our little Rory’s all growed up!

The movie is being praised by many critics, most of whom praiseMelissa McCarthy for her comedic delivery, calling her a “master” for her “her natural ability to garner both laughs and affectionate sighs from her audience.” The New York Times even called Melissa the “bliss” of the film.

Melissa Attacked by Reviewer – Low Blow

Despite it’s success at the box office and with reviews, the New York Observer‘s Rex Reed took some low shots at Melissa’s size, using terrible words to describe her. Calling her a “gimmick comedian,” he followed up by calling the beautiful Melissa words such as “hippo” and much worse, which is pains me to even mention. Makes me sick. And that he could even imply that her success was due to her size and not her talent is just as bad.

Thankfully, I’m not the only one sickened by this low blow. Hollywood and fans around the world have been in an uproar about the comments.

Here is more about the movie – since that’s really our focus anyway:

Keiko Agena in “I Hate LA”

Keiko Agena (Lane Kim on Gilmore Girls) stars in one of 10 interlocking vignettes in the indy horror film, I Hate LA. The film aims to highlight the “flawed monsters” of Hollywood by featuring 10 interlocking horror vignettes written and directed by 6 women directors. Each short story is set in a different part of LA – Keiko’s segment is of Downtown LA.

Unlike the beautiful city of light, love, and culture, Los Angeles is perhaps the most hated and berated metropolis in the world. From the gnarled traffic, pervading loneliness and narcissism of its residents to the constant loss, rejection, and cruelty of tinsel town…each area of Los Angeles proper has a figurative and sometimes literal monster lurking near its sidewalks paved with stars.

Let these acclaimed Mistresses of Horror provide their uniquely devastating, no holds barred opinion of what makes the city of angels and hidden devils so profoundly effed up.

You can see a short scene with Keiko at 56 seconds into this trailer. Please note, the video is disturbing and not appropriate for younger viewers.

The film is currently screening on the indy circuit.
