Lauren Graham’s Book Countdown! Are you a True Graham Cracker?

Lauren Graham’s debut novel, Someday, Someday, Maybe is officially released one week from today, on April 30th.  On May 3rd, she’ll be in New York at the Random House Open House in the morning, then at Union Square Barnes & Noble in the evening.

the author-to-be, Lorelai Gilmore - I mean - Lauren Graham

I don’t know what they’ve done to her eyes in that picture but anyway, looks like tickets are still available for the Open House and if you need it in print, Nookbook, Kindle, or audiobook, there’s this thing called the internet.  Or better still, support your friendly neighbourhood bookstore, if you still have one.

How hardcore a Graham Cracker are you?  Have you pre-ordered the hardcover version AND the audiobook (unabridged and read by Lauren herself)?  Have you booked your vacation around both Barnes & Noble appearances, in NY and LA?  Can you spell ‘restraining order’?

I’m plumping for the audio version because a) at the speed she talks, it’ll be quicker than reading it myself and b) it’ll be like she’s reading me to sleep every night.  Night night, crazy Lorelai lady.  How about a trilogy next?

(Bonus! Through the magic of The Facebook, pre-ordering can bag you an autographed bookplate and an invitation to a video chat with Lauren on SSM Eve, April 29th.)

Thanks to the Sophie Kinsella for the RH heads up.  With friends like those…

David Sutcliffe reminisces on Gilmore Girls and gets new TV show

Gilmore Girls’ own Christopher Hayden has a new series! The pilot episode of Cracked, ‘How The Light Gets In’ premiered on CBC in Canada this week, with David Sutcliffe starring as a seasoned police officer with post-traumatic stress disorder. Somewhat ironically, he gets assigned to help lead a new psychological crimes unit but he does get partnered with an attractive doctor lady to solve crimes and ‘resolve crises’.

knock knock?

In an interview with George Stroumboulopoulos, Saskatchewan born David had the following memories of being on Gilmore Girls:

It was an amazing experience, seven years on a show that is kind of a cultural phenomenon… the fan base is passionate, dedicated, it was amazing to be a part of that and the visceral response from the audience around that show… you’re kinda the dad who left and went away… I would see young women come up to me in the street and they’d be shaking and they’d kind of hold this place where they know I’m an actor, they know its not me and yet they have this association with this character. And then unconsciously probably with their own father and so they’re almost in a daze and in those moments I realize the power of this show.

… which got me thinking about actors and acting. Whenever Lauren Graham appears on Ellen, she’s like a six-year old on battery fluid and you can see how hard she must have worked to focus that natural energy into playing Lorelai. Like how when Robin Williams plays a psycho, his comic intensity becomes scary because the energy is there, it’s just channeled somewhere terrifying.

The thing about Chris is that his overriding role in Gilmore Girls was to be the errant dad – not through his own choosing remember – who tries to make amends but in the end, just wasn’t right for Lorelai. Their timing was always out – or more likely they weren’t ever truly right together – and Rory was the simply the best thing that could have come out of that relationship.

So if you see him in the street, try not to be mad.  Tell him he looks in great shape (doesn’t he?)  Or if you really can’t let go of the character, remember he’s single and filthy rich.

If you’re in the right neighborhood, catch the pilot here or on CBC, Tuesdays at 9pm.

Good luck with the series David – your new friends look surly.

chris' new friends sure are surly

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Sutton Foster talk Gilmore Girls and Bunheads!

With Bunheads’ imminent return on Monday, DisneyInfoNet bagged a fabulous interview with Amy Sherman-Palladino and Sutton Foster. Fabulous why? Because they both talk at length about Gilmore Girls, the comparisons with Bunheads, the Gilmore Girls’ alumni showing up as cameos, casting Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) and overflowing with as much love for GG as they clearly have for each other. Seriously, get a room guys.

Sutton and Amy Sherman Hat Palladino Welles

Sutton Foster: …one of my favorite shows was Gilmore, I mean of all time, and Amy’s one of my favorite writers, and we took a meeting and I basically fan-girled all over her, and then a couple of weeks later they called and were talking to me about this pilot.

Amy Palladino: …when I find a particular person who can knock it out of the ballpark, it’s like Orson Welles and his group of mad actors that he would use in everything – not that I’m Orson Welles, although I wouldn’t mind being Orson Welles someday – but the idea that you’re lucky enough in your career to collect people who are particularly good at the stuff that you like to write, and when you find them you want to write for them.  I find myself longing to write for Liza Weil, or longing to write for Sean Gunn, or longing to write for Todd Lowe, or Rose Abdoo … because there’s not billions of people out there who are special. And if you find a merry band of madmen who will come and make things wonderful, I will write for those people forever.

For EVER, guys.

DisneyNetInfo guy: … where do you get your inspiration to make shows with such great plots and interesting characters?
Amy: Well, I don’t know, just a lack of therapy, perhaps, no time to work it out on a couch with a man and an iPad. I love family interaction, and in a weird way Gilmore, obviously was family, but this show is a new kind of family, I’ll keep saying that, because it’s my favorite tagline ever, but it is about people who, you know, somebody once told me, “You just created your own family.” I don’t care what, if your family isn’t exactly what you need it to be, then go out and create it, find it. And that’s what this show is about. It’s about creating your own family, finding your own support system.

Listen to DisneyInfoNet‘s youtube recording or indulge in the full interview transcript at WeLoveSoaps.net, it’s good stuff.

From next week, I’ll be recapping Bunhead episodes as they air, with high hopes for some Gilmore-style nuttiness from the only woman who can bring it, Mrs Sherman Palladino Welles. If you haven’t crossed paths with Bunheads yet, it plays like a Gilmore Girls’ relation (happily, more akin to Jackson’s brother Beau than Jackson’s cousin Rune). Wacky adorable townsfolk – check. Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) – check.  Attractive, likeable brunette with severe case of verbal diarrhoea – check.  Plus dancing interludes, teen angst and girl power. We’ve got a full set of first series’ Bunheads episode recaps (which if I may say, are just delightful) right here.

I’m particularly looking forward to Liza Weil’s (Paris Geller) cameo as dotty Truly’s sister and seeing what becomes of the girls’ relationships.  I’m hoping that Michelle actually comes back to Paradise after macing the Christmas performers, because otherwise it’ll be a really short series and how about more possums?

Bunheads airs this coming Monday, January 7 at 9 pm Eastern.
