The Great Loves of Gilmore Girls: Coffee-Coffee-Coffee!

coffeecoffeecoffee

If you had to choose, would you pick coffee or Gilmore Girls?  For me, Gilmore Girls is like chicken soup, it nourishes the soul and comforts and more.  I’d give up chicken soup over Gilmore Girls, if I could still have chicken.  I might even give up chicken if they’d Extra Crispy Kentucky Fry something else.

Lorelai: Oh, I can’t stop drinking the coffee. I stop drinking coffee, I stop doing the standing and walking and the words putting-into-sentence doing.
Luke: I’ll make you some coffee.
(s04e20 Luke Can See Her Face)

From the very first scene in the pilot episode, Lorelai’s coffee habit is as ever-present as her mother’s disappointment:

Lorelai: Please, Luke. Please, please, please.
Luke: How many cups have you had this morning?
Lorelai: None.
Luke: Plus?
Lorelai: Five but yours is better.
Luke: You have a problem.
Lorelai: Yes I do.
Luke [filling her mug]: Junkie.
Lorelai: Angel. You’ve got wings, baby.

And is that her own mug she’s brought to the coffee shop?  Make of that what you will, but this woman loves coffee.  For heaven’s sake, she dreams about coffee alongside being in love and pregnant with twins (s03e01 Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days…) and she’s passed her addiction onto her daughter…

When Rory visits a psychologist after a boat-related misdemeanour, her emotional breakdown comes when thinking about her boyfriend – and that pesky coffee bean.

Rory: I… I don’t think I can take running into him every day in the halls and the paper and the coffee cart. Oh my God. I’m gonna have to quit drinking coffee – and I love coffee! [Sobbing and burying her face in a fistful of tissues]  I really love coffee.

Part of Gilmore folklore of course is that Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) was not keen on coffee and drank cola instead.

The bean-focussed article at Sprudge wryly notes that:

Lorelai takes Luke’s coffee black while she adds cream to her work coffee and her refrigerated, pre-ground home coffee: a sure sign they are destined to break up and get back together weekly for the rest of their lives.

I have a little stove-top Bialetti percolator and I savour the ritual of it, screwing the thing together, waiting for the gurgling, the aroma filling the kitchen.  But I’d have Gilmore Girls over coffee and most food groups, any day of the week.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a coffee article without Lorelai’s immortal words:

Server at Weston’s: Here we go. Three coffees.
Lorelai: Oh, no, I’m sorry. I only ordered one.
Server: You said “Coffee, coffee, coffee”.
Lorelai: Haha no see I said “coffee-coffee-coffee”.
Server: Right.
Lorelai: As in I really need coffee-coffee-coffee. You know.
Server: No.
Lorelai: Coffee-coffee-coffee is a saying, like an exaggeration. It’s a funny, desperate cry for caffeine. It’s just my thing. ‘Cos everybody knows I drink a lot of coffee, so the day can’t start until I’ve had my jolt. It’s a bit. My bit.  It’s not a particularly funny bit unless you know me, then… You know what, three coffees would be great. What do I owe you?
(s05e15 Jews and Chinese Food)

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a slice of cheesecake and a cup of joe.  Anyone out there love coffee as much as Lorelai?

Gilmore Girls Trivia: Rome

I’ve brought back some Gilmore Girls trivia questions… to start things off, a question about Rory’s trip to Rome with Emily…

New Gilmore Girls Trivia Revealed

In honor of Gilmore Girls’ 10 year anniversary, CNN’s Katie decided to dig up some Gilmore Girls trivia and interview some of those associated with the show.

Keiko Agena (Lane Kim on Gilmore Girls) talked about shooting the pilot and how she was “loving the script and just filled with hope that everybody would love it as much as we did.” Which we did, of course! Keiko also talks about shooting Transformers 3 and her puppet classes. Katie also interviewed Aaron Berman, who is soon releasing The Gilmore Girls Companion book, who supplied this great quote:

“In the end, Gilmore Girls remains beloved the world over today because it addresses the absurdities of life, and the imperfections in our relationships with one another, with humor and an understanding of what it is to be human.

There are stereotypes, certainly – Kirk’s cluelessness, Taylor’s scheming, Emily’s disapproving – but every character is also presented as decidedly human. As Lorelai observes of Kirk, ‘it’s all any of us wants – to find a nice person to hang out with ’til we drop dead. Not a lot to ask.”

gilmore-girls-season-3-21.jpgSome trivia revealed in the interviews:

  • The pilot episode was shot in Toronto, though the rest was shot in California
  • Lauren Graham was the last person cast in Gilmore Girls because she was contractually obligated to another show, which fell through
  • Actors spent between 14-21 hours on set each day
  • Crew members, who often worked longer, would sleep on set! Apparently Lorelai’s bed was a favorite snooze place!
  • Kirk was inspired by Amy Sherman-Palladino’s father, Don Sherman, who always played different characters on the show Gimme a Break
  • Emily Gilmore wore jewelry owned by Kelly Bishop because she’s allergic to costume jewelry. Her gold necklace (to the right) was purchased for the show and Kelly has only worn it twice, in plays, since Gilmore Girls ended.
  • Some of the fast-paced dialogue was created through editing by removing any pauses between line delivery
  • Gypsy was often covered in motor oil… which was actually steak sauce!

“Mad Men” on “Gilmore Girls”

HOLLYWOOD - APRIL 22: Actor John Hamm arrives at the Us Weekly Hot Hollywood Party held at My House nightclub on April 22, 2009 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images)

Thanks to a tip from Twitter follower Sarah, your trivia for today is a connection between the acclaimed series Mad Men and our beloved Gilmore Girls. John Hamm, who is best known now for his role as Don Draper, guest starred in a single episode of Gilmore Girls as Peyton Sanders.

John Hamm guest starred in the episode ‘Eight O’Clock at the Oasis‘ as a wealthy man at an auction with Lorelai & Emily. Lorelai and Peyton bid on the free wine together and Lorelai is briefly attracted to him… though very briefly.

Apparently, Peyton had “No personality. And no sense of humor. And no idea how boring he was.”

Lorelai & Lauren Graham Love George Clooney

In ‘You’ve Been Gilmored‘, Rory complains about Lorelai’s love for George Clooney:

“Yeah, the story is you calling yourself Mrs. Clooney for two and a half hours.”

This is a fun piece of trivia because, in 2001, Lauren Graham appeared on Letterman and told a story about how she once had a fleeting thought that “George Clooney wants me.” Check out the story just under 6 minutes into the below interview:

Is a Kropog Real?

In ‘How Many Kropogs to Cape Cod?‘, we learn about Kropogs, so I thought I’d tell you more! A Kropog was a unit of distance specifically made up for Gilmore Girls. You might think, like with many other things, that it was a pop culture reference to something real. This time, however, it is not! The writers of Gilmore Girls made up a 1944 Yale alumni, Maxwell Kropog, who was said to be the originator of this unit of distance – it was based on his short height.

Trivia question: how many Kropogs is it from Rory’s dorm to Logan’s dorm?
