History of the Dragonfly Inn

A while ago, I put together a 25-question Gilmore Girls quiz. One of the most difficult questions in that quiz related to the Dragonfly Inn, asking in which other series the building was used. The correct answer was The Waltons. So, rather than talk about the history of the Dragonfly Inn on Gilmore Girls (that it used to be a B&B owned by Fran Weston’s family), I decided to talk about the history of the building on tv.

In the 1970s series The Waltons, the building was the Waltons’ home. Although the building was dismantled and moved to a different Warner Bros. lot, it has been a working exterior set for many years. In Gilmore Girls, Lorelai and Sookie purchase the Dragonfly Inn, which at the time still looks similar to the Walton home. Lorelai and Sookie do many renovations to the home before its open for business.

Here’s the Waltons opening, where you can see their home:

And here’s the scene of the Dragonfly Inn opening in ‘Raincoats and Recipes‘ on Gilmore Girls:

Gilmore Girls Trivia: Yale Bulldog

Gilmore Girls Fight FaceIn our last trivia question, we asked:What is Paul Anka (the dog) called before Lorelai adopts him?

  • Lucy 17 – 4% of all votes
  • Patch 42 – 11% of all votes
  • Coco 301 – 78% of all votes
  • Spot 25 – 6% of all votes
    Total Votes: 385

That’s right! In ‘Fight Face‘, Lorelai falls in love with a shaggy dog named Coco when she’s missing Rory. However, Coco was “too cutesy” of a name, so she names him Paul Anka!

So, just for fun, here’s another dog-themed trivia question:

The Amazing Doggy Swami

In ‘Just Like Gwen and Gavin,’ we finally get back some of the Stars Hollow charm that made Gilmore Girls so amazing. It’s time for the Stars Hollow Winter Carnival, but Taylor isn’t there to set it up, so Kirk is appointed to run it. And Kirk, master of being an oddball himself, is asking Lorelai to do something tame for her booth…

However, Lorelai has her way, and her booth features Paul Anka as “the Amazing Doggy Swami,” the fortune telling dog. Swami is a Hindu honorific that means “he who knows and is master of himself”. It can also refer to “husband”, which is a little bit funny (or perhaps ironic) give Lorelai’s relationship with Luke. Do you think Lorelai was unconsciously making some reference there?

And, since you may not know this piece of trivia, the title of the episode refers to Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, who had a secret love child he also kept from Gwen. Just like Lorelai & Luke. :)

If anyone is interested in making up a list of all the Stars Hollow events and which episode they took place in, let me know! I’d be happy to build that out into a mega Stars Hollow events post, but could use the help!

Is Stars Hollow Real?

I wish Stars Hollow were real. I would pick up and go live there. A town with that kind of charm and community – priceless! Even without the fictional characters, it’s a town that just seems spunky. So, is it real? Sadly, no. However, Stars Hollow is based on a very real village, that of Washington Depot in Connecticut, also known just simply as Washington, Connecticut.

Stars Hollow, as we know it, was not built for Gilmore Girls. The WB set was already existing. That said, according to people who have been to Washington, there were all the “familiar elements” from the set. It had a central lawn, small businesses, and buildings none of them higher than a single level. There was even a diner, of sorts, called Marty’s.

In the special features on the DVD for the first season, Amy Sherman-Palladino said that she and husband Dan drove through Washington Depot and stopped at this diner. Everyone knew each other and they felt like the town would be a great place to live. Hear Amy explain it here:

Check out these links to compare the fictional Stars Hollow to the real Washintgon Depot. Then let Kirk take you on a tour of Stars Hollow, here to Luke’s:

What is it you love about Stars Hollow (the people aside)? Do you think you could like living in a place like Stars Hollow?

Gilmore Girls Trivia: Luke & Lorelai

In our last trivia question, I asked: Where does Lorelai record the first reservation for the Dragonfly Inn?

  • In the reservation book 0 – 0% of all votes
  • On Independence Inn stationary 3 – 1% of all votes
  • On Dragonfly Inn stationary 2 – 0% of all votes
  • On a gum wrapper 370 – 92% of all votes
  • On a Post-It note 29 – 7% of all votes
    Total Votes: 404

This one must have been too easy for you guys!! On ‘The Incredible Shrinking Lorelais,’ the phone had only just been installed at the Dragonfly Inn when Lorelai gets her first reservation. Having nothing else at hand, Lorelai grabs a gum wrapper. This horrifies Michel, who says: “It’s embarrassing. This is an historical document.”

Gilmore Girls Trvia: Dragonfly Inn

Yanic TruesdaleIn our last trivia question, we asked you this: What does Michel think Sookie’s son’s name is?

  • Davey 37 – 6% of all votes
  • George 43 – 7% of all votes
  • Jim 16 – 3% of all votes
  • Truman 528 – 85% of all votes
    Total Votes: 624

In the episode, ‘The Nanny and the Professor,‘ Michel (Yanic Truesdale) feels like Sookie’s nanny, Toban, is butting on on his bonding time with Sookie and on his life in general. In attempt to get back in Sookie’s good graces, Michel offers to babysit Davey. Aside from getting in over his head, with Davey getting stuck under the bed, Michel thinks that his name is Truman!

“Is that his name? I’ve been calling him Truman… [Lorelai asks where he got that from] I don’t know, I heard it wrong, okay? Do you think he’s gonna hold this against me?”

Here’s the scene of Michel with Davey (aka Truman):

Davey is played by actor Griffin Churchill and was only seen in 3 episodes of Gilmore Girls. He’s done work since the show on Without a Trace and on Navy NCIS.

Gilmore Girls Trivia: Gigi's Name

Our last trivia question came up with these final poll results: The name of the street for the Dragonfly Inn was nearly changed to…

  • Cuts and Bruises 11 – 2% of all votes
  • Sores and Boils 493 – 90% of all votes
  • Boils and Bruises 30 – 5% of all votes
  • Sores and Bruises 13 – 2% of all votes
    Total Votes: 547

The majority are correct! The street name that Taylor had dug up was Sores and Boils Alley. The other options were also not feasible: Constabulary Road (which had a duplicate), Chergogagog Manchogagog Cherbonagongamog, or Crusty Bulge.
