Copper Boom!

In ‘The Lorelais’ First Day at Yale‘, we are introduced to a new pop culture phrase: “Copper Boom.” At the start of the episode, Rory is packing her makeup, asking herself “When did I become one of those girls with dozens of beauty products, none of which are expendable? It used to be a touch of mascara, dab of Coppertone, zip, bam, boom, out the door.” However, Lorelai heard “copper and boom,” which they then turn into their own catch phrase.

Well, Lorelai makes it a catch phrase. Later, she says “Copper Boom”, saying it’s what Rory had said to her when she was trying to speed her up. Obviously that wasn’t what was being said, but now they have a phrase which means “to hurry up” or to “get to it.”. It’s even in the urban dictionary and there’s also a t-shirt designed around it!

Here’s the scene where Lorelai first uses the phrase:

Have you ever said “copper boom”?

Did You Like Rory's Graduation Speech?

gilmore-girls-3-season-26.jpgIn ‘Those Are Strings, Pinocchio‘, Rory is made valedictorian of Chilton (not Paris) and has to give a speech. And what a speech!!

Here’s the transcript of Rory’s Valedictorian Speech:

Headmaster Charleston, faculty members, fellow students, family and friends, welcome. We never thought this day would come. We prayed for its quick delivery, crossed days off our calendars, counted hours, minutes, and seconds, and now that it’s here, I’m sorry it is because it means leaving friends who inspire me and teachers who have been my mentors – so many people who have shaped my life and my fellow students’ lives impermeably and forever. I live in two worlds. One is a world of books. I’ve been a resident of Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County, hunted the white whale aboard the Pequod, fought alongside Napoleon, sailed a raft with Huck and Jim, committed absurdities with Ignatius J. Reilly, rode a sad train with Anna Karenina, and strolled down Swann’s Way. It’s a rewarding world, but my second one is by far superior. My second one is populated with characters slightly less eccentric but supremely real, made of flesh and bone, full of love, who are my ultimate inspiration for everything. Richard and Emily Gilmore are kind, decent, unfailingly generous people. They are my twin pillars without whom I could not stand. I am proud to be their grandchild. But my ultimate inspiration comes from my best friend, the dazzling woman from whom I received my name and my life’s blood, Lorelai Gilmore.

My mother never gave me any idea that I couldn’t do whatever I wanted to do or be whomever I wanted to be. She filled our house with love and fun and books and music, unflagging in her efforts to give me role models from Jane Austen to Eudora Welty to Patti Smith. As she guided me through these incredible eighteen years, I don’t know if she ever realized that the person I most wanted to be was her.

Thank you, Mom. You are my guidepost for everything.

As we prepare ourselves today to leave…

Did what Rory say reflect well on her life at Chilton? Was it an appropriate speech? What did you like or dislike about it? Do you think we missed a lot of the speech, since obviously it was meant to continue after the last sentence there.

Why Does Jess Run to Jimmy?

In ‘Here Comes the Son‘, Jess runs from Stars Hollow… straight to his dad, Jimmy. This obviously confuses Jimmy, who wants to know if Jess is in trouble and why he’s there. I wonder this too. After all, Jess has only met his father for a few brief moments, since Jimmy ran out of the diner and was too scared to come back. In this episode, Jimmy admits to being anything but a father, but Jess insists “I don’t need a daddy, I just need a place to crash.”

gilmore-girls-3-season-02.jpg

If you were Jess, would your first instinct have been to go to Jimmy, a father you don’t know, or to return to your home city and crash with old friends? Maybe Jess had no old friends? Or maybe he expected that perhaps Jimmy was the one person who couldn’t turn him away?

What do you think? What led Jess to go to Jimmy?

Here’s a great scene between Jess & Jimmy from this episode:

Do You Have Birthday Traditions?

In ‘Happy Birthday, Baby‘, we learn yet another of the special ways that our Gilmore girls celebrate birthdays. In this episode, Rory has used mallomars to spell out “Happy Birthday Lorelai” on the table:

In addition, Rory is trying to plan the world’s biggest pizza for her mom’s birthday. Yes, the Gilmores go all out for the big b-day.

Why do you think they love birthdays so much? Are you surprised that all of Stars Hollow seems to celebrate their birthdays in a bigger way than those of anyone else?

And do YOU have special birthday traditions you do every year? I’d love to know what what they are!

Does Paris Have Regrets?

gilmore-girls-season-3-23.jpgIn ‘The Big One‘, Rory gets her “big” envelopes from Harvard and presumably also Yale and another school. However, Paris was not so lucky. First off, who was surprised that Paris didn’t make it into Harvard?

After finding out she didn’t make it into Harvard, Paris has a bit of a meltdown when giving a speech at Chilton. She ends up breaking down not just about Harvard, but about just having slept with her boyfriend, Jamie.

“I’m not going to Harvard, I’m not going to Harvard. I had sex, but I’m not going to Harvard.”

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bstw5YyxihE]

Paris had earlier confided the sex news to Rory, admitting that she thought sex was ‘inevitable’ in a relationship. I’m not sure she feels she had sex for the right reasons. Why do you think she took this step?

Now Paris says she feels like a slut and worries that Jamie won’t love her, now that she’s not a Harvard girl.

“After all the trouble this sex thing has caused me, I had better’ve been good.”

It’s not clear to me which thing upsets Paris more – having sex or not getting into Harvard. What is clear, though, is that Paris isn’t sure of herself or her decisions. Being rejected from Harvard maybe made her feel like Jamie would reject her too. What do you think?

Would You Believe Jess?

In ‘Swan Song‘, Jess gets “beaked” by a swan and, surprise surprise, doesn’t want to admit to it. Hey, it’s not so macho to say you were attacked by a swan! Plus, given Jess’ history at school – and with Dean – perhaps he figured nobody would believe him anyway.

gilmore-girls-swan-song.jpg

However, the black eye came at a bad time – right as Jess shows up to the Gilmore mansion for a dinner! So, it’s not exactly a time when Jess and Rory can talk about the issue. If Jess had been honest from the start with Rory – or Luke or anyone – do you think they would have believed him?

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqu4VByBVi4]

Ok, and I couldn’t resist bringing up a second topic here – the fact that Rory is “maybe” thinking of taking things further with Jess – why is she moving so quickly?!

Was Emily in a Panic About Trix?

gilmore-girls-season-3-22.jpgIn ‘That’ll Do, Pig‘, we again come to the troubled relationship between Trix & Emily. However, in this episode we see Emily take a stand… over green beans.

Specifically, Trix has just announced that she’s planning on moving back to Hartford from London in order to be close to her family. Richard assures her that he and Emily will wait on her – day and night – for whatever she needs. At that, Emily is in pure shock. So when the next course is ready to come, Emily says “I’m not ready,” and proceeds to take an hour and a half to eat the remaining green beens she was allotted 12 minutes to eat.

Is Emily doing this to piss off Trix or is she simply in a state of complete shock, not knowing what else to do but stall… and stall anything?
