Natural Chemistry: Lauren & Alexis

In The Gilmore Girls Companion, Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore on Gilmore Girls) shares that one of her favourite scenes in Gilmore Girls comes from the third episode of the series. In that episode, there’s a shot where Lauren Graham‘s (Lorelai Gilmore on Gilmore Girls) smooths away Alexis Bledel‘s (Rory Gilmore on Gilmore Girls) hair:

“I thought, ‘ What a beautiful gesture.’ That was… something that Lauren was doing in terms of showing affection for her daughter.”

The little behind-the-scenes interview talks about these natural gestures between the two actresses, things that were unscripted.

Do you think it’s this chemistry that made the series so loveable?

Was Kirk Too Over-the-Top?

In The Gilmore Girls Companion, there’s a great story about how Sean Gunn came to be a regular on the series, though originally he just played a small part. I won’t give it away, but at the end of the interview, Sean reflects:

“Sometimes I watch the very first scene I ever did on the show and I’m like, ‘God, that was pretty good; how did I get so over the top after that?”

Do you think that was true? Did Kirk become *too* over-the-top? Or was he just spot-on quirky?

Lorelai the Feminist?

As promised, today we begin the journey to re-watch the Gilmore Girls series and discuss things along the way.

In the Pilot episode, Rory describes how she got her name, saying…

“She was lying in the hospital thinking about how men name boys after themselves all the time, you know, so why couldn’t women? She says her feminism just kind of took over. Though personally I think a lot of Demerol also went into that decision.”

Do you think Lorelai is a feminist? Not just in this instance, but overall? Why or why not?

Feminism refers to movements aimed at establishing and defending equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for women.

This is my 4th time going through the series on GilmoreNews.com, though each time has been different. We’ve had some great discussions, and hopefully more fantastic discussions to come!

Given the recent release of The Gilmore Girls Companion, I will try to draw inspiration from the pages therein for some fun discussions. This first discussion was prompted by one of the quotes Aaron Berman brought forth in his overview of this episode.

I may, at other times, revisit old topics. For the most part, discussions will be new. And if you have any episode or topic you want to put forth a question on, let me know!

“The Gilmore Girls Companion” Inspired Gilmore Girls Marathon

Aaron Berman‘s soon-to-be cult favourite, The Gilmore Girls Companion, arrived on my doorstep this afternoon! Here it is, my very own copy for review! While I could just do a traditional book review, I’m not going to! What I’m going to do, instead, is something that involves YOU, the best fan community out there!

So, Gilmore Girls fans, get out your DVDs! We are going to begin watching Gilmore Girls over again, and I’ll be taking inspiration from The Gilmore Girls Companion for our discussion questions. I’m going to aim for 2 discussions per week. After that, I’ll do a traditional-ish review of the book and of all the goodies that I’m not going to be giving away every week! ;)

Are you ready?! If you want to read along with me too, order your copy of the book here

P.S. a little bird told me that another copy may just have YOUR name on it soon too! Stay tuned!

Lorelai & Cucumber Water

In ‘A Vineyard Valentine‘, Lorelai quite enjoys her cucumber water during her “workout”, saying “What is it about cucumber water that makes it so much more refreshing than non-cucumber water?” However, if you hark back to ‘There’s the Rub’, Lorelai, perhaps more in character with her anti-vegetable policy, had a contrary reaction to cucumber water: “cucumber water. Yuck.”

Which do you think more likely to be Lorelai’s true reaction? Was this a writing mistake, or did Lorelai only dislike cucumber water at first because Emily was forcing it on her at the spa?

Lorelai & Lauren Graham Love George Clooney

In ‘You’ve Been Gilmored‘, Rory complains about Lorelai’s love for George Clooney:

“Yeah, the story is you calling yourself Mrs. Clooney for two and a half hours.”

This is a fun piece of trivia because, in 2001, Lauren Graham appeared on Letterman and told a story about how she once had a fleeting thought that “George Clooney wants me.” Check out the story just under 6 minutes into the below interview:

Rory Wants to Stay in the DAR?

In ‘Friday Night’s Alright for Fighting‘, Emily & Rory argue about the DAR. Emily wants her to quit – Rory doesn’t want to. Rory says she has friends there… don’t you think this weird?

Are Rory & Emily fighting just to fight… or does Rory really want to stay in the DAR?
