Why Does Rory Say 'No' to Jess?

In ‘Last Week Fights, This Week Tights‘, Jess is trying to be covert while reading the ‘You Deserve Love’ manual. After reading the manual, we see him confront Rory and try to convince her to move to New York with him, to “live together and be together,” saying that she can count on him now (not realizing she’d have to drop everything). Rory, of course, says no (it was a little out of the question).

This, if you look forward, is pretty much the same thing that Logan does with Rory. Both guys assume that Rory will drop everything in order to go to pursue his dream. Each time, they assume Rory will be ok with this. Perhaps we should have guessed Rory’s answer to Logan when her answer to Jess was also no.

Was Rory right, in this particular case, to say ‘No’ to Jess? Could she have picked up her own dream in New York? Was she saying ‘No’ because she had no feelings for him or because he was asking too much? Or asking too quickly?

Why Does Jess Confess Then Leave?

In ‘Nag Hammadi is Where They Found the Gnostic Gospels‘, we are faced with the fact that Jess has some MAJOR commitment issues!! When he starts seeing Rory around town, it’s clear he has something to say, but is afraid to say it. He keeps running off on Rory, which of course pisses her off (because she’s the one with the right to talk out in a huff!)

However, after being in town only 24 hours, and Lorelai confronting him saying Rory is “over” Jess, on his way out of town he happens to spot Rory. At this point, we can already see that perhaps Jess has matured – he’s talking to his mom and won’t accept Luke’s money. So there are clues here that stuff is different. But perhaps not enough.

Anyway, Jess runs after Rory and begs her to stop. Rory goes on about imagining what Jess would say at that moment and what he says… “I love you.” And with that, he leaves.

Why does he do this? Why leave? Why say this, potentially hurting Rory?? What is it all about?

Should Rory Date?

gilmore-girls-season-4-17.jpgIn ‘The Fundamental Things Apply‘, we bring up the other side of the discussion we started this week with Dean – about how Rory also is not a “dater.”

In this episode, Rory was completely oblivious to the fact that she was being asked out by Trevor, a guy she finds creepy because he carries water. Then there’s Marty, aka “Naked Guy”, who Rory calls sweet, as if she’s unable to look at him in a non-friend way.

Perhaps Rory is still recovering from her two serious relationships – with Dean and with Jess – or perhaps she doesn’t know how to think of a boy in non-relationship terms. Maybe she doesn’t know how to “date” - to just go out with a guy, even if nothing comes of it.

Trying to take Lorelai’s advice to date, Rory goes out with Trevor, but has a horrible time. She doesn’t know how to act casually on a date. And perhaps this is because she had her first date with Dean with Lorelai there and her first “date” with Jess was more of an “ok, we’re jumping into a relationship” thing.

Why does Rory have such trouble with dating? Should it matter if she dates?

Is Rory Spoiled?

gilmore-girls-3-season-10.jpgIn ‘Face-Off‘, Rory leaves a very long ranting message on Jess’ machine saying that she’s “spoiled” and wants to stay that way. Presumably she means that Dean treated her with certain standards and, despite now being with Jess, she wants those same standards. This is her full message:

“I just wanted to let you know that this is the last weekend I spend sitting around like an idiot hoping you’ll call. Okay? I’m not going to be that girl. From now on, I want a plan. I mean a real plan with a time and a place. And I’m tired of hearing “Let’s hook up later.” What does that mean, anyway? What’s later? How do I set my watch to later? Later doesn’t cut it any more, got it? And, yeah, you know, maybe I am spoiled; but guess what, I like being spoiled! I plan to go on being spoiled. And if that doesn’t sound like something that you can or want to do, then, fine! I’m sure you’ll find another girl who doesn’t mind sitting around cleaning her keyboard on a Friday night hoping you’ll call. But it’s not going to be me!”

Is Rory unrealistic in her expectations of relationships because of Dean? Is she spoiled? Or is she just a normal girl asking for normal things in a relationship? And, given that she’s probably justified in her rant, why would Rory ask Jess to delete the message after she finds he’s surprised her with concert tickets? And why, after all that, does she look sad?

Why Does Rory Apologize to Dean?

In ‘Let the Games Begin‘, as soon as Rory & Jess finally share their first kiss (or two), Rory realizes she has to go. After Jess sighs in saying, “Whatever else happens between us, at least we know that part works”, Rory says “I have to go”, despite obviously enjoying the time herself.

After this moment, we see Rory climbing up to see Dean in his bedroom. She wants him to know she’s sorry for treating him badly and says he was “the most amazing boyfriend in the world” and that he made her very happy. She won’t talk with him about Jess, but hopes that some day he won’t hate her.

Does Rory go to Dean because she sees her relationship with Jess moving quickly? Or did the kiss make Rory realize how badly things had ended with Dean? What prompted the apology – then and there?

Why Didn't Rory Break Up with Dean?

In ‘They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?‘, Dean comes to say hi to Rory while she’s at the dance marathon. Jess & Shane are there watching, and Jess makes sure Dean sees that. Jess stays for 8 hours watching Rory – or pissing off Dean – until Dean has enough. He doesn’t want to be Rory’s “pawn” against Jess, which I think is what he feels like.

gilmore-girls-season-shoot-gilmores.jpg

When Rory later tries to complain to Dean about Jess being there and bugging her – particularly the making out – Dean has obviously had enough. When Jess & Rory fight about him being there, right in front of Dean, Dean simply says “I’m not her boyfriend anymore.” He knows Rory doesn’t want to be with him, though she says she does, and that she really wants to be with Jess. He’s giving her the freedom for that.

Later, when Jess comes to see if Rory is ok, Rory admits everything is true – about how she feels about him. Jess agrees. So, what I want to know is, why did Rory string Dean along like that? If she knew she had feelings for Jess, was it fair to Dean to treat him like that? Should she have broken up with him, even if Jess was not interested in her in return?

What stopped Rory from breaking up with Dean?

Has Jess Given Up on Rory?

gilmore-girls-oasis-2.jpgIn ‘Eight O’Clock at the Oasis‘, when the sprinkler gets stuck at Dwight’s house, Jess comes to Rory’s rescue to help turn it off. Rory found him when Dean didn’t return her page and she was running into town looking for help.

Both dripping with water, Jess asks Rory how she’s doing. It’s a sweet moment, but one broken when Dean returns Rory’s page to say he’s coming over to help her. In a moment of chivalry – or defeat? – Jess turns back on the sprinkler so that Dean can save the day.

Why does Jess do this for Dean – or Rory? Has he given up completely?
