Rory & Lorelai Named as Greatest Characters

In celebration of Entertainment Weekly’s 20th anniversary, they put together a list of the 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years.

On that list, in a joint count, are Rory & Lorelai of Gilmore Girls!

The full list is in the newsprint edition or here, but as you can see above, Lorelai & Rory took spot 65 on the list. Together they created a television first: mothers & daughters who were best friends. And with it, “some of the sharpest – and speediest – dialogue we’d ever heard on TV.”

Apparently the scripts didn’t even have punctuation and they needed a dialogue coach to help them not get overloaded with so much to say!

Thanks Adina for the scans!

Why Wasn’t Paris Surprised?

liza_weil.jpgIn ‘He’s Slippin’ ‘Em Bread… Dig?‘, Paris doesn’t seem surprised that Rory is coming back to Yale. She says:

Rory: I just wanted to tell you something. Brrrrrrrrrrring, I’m coming back to Yale!
Paris: What was that sound?
Rory: It was a drumroll.
Paris: You really had to do a drumroll for that? Of course you’re coming back to Yale. What are you gonna do without a college degree–drive a forklift?

Why wasn’t Paris surprised by this when it was such a huge concern to her before?

Does Richard Like Logan?

In ‘Twenty-One Is the Loneliest Number‘, Richard begins to get worried that Rory is turning into Emily – that she’s all about social functions and her man… Logan. He thinks it’s a bad “direction” for Rory to be headed… that she needs to be “working toward something.” I’m surprised that he threw Logan into the “bad direction” part of this conversation, since I’d always thought Richard liked Logan for Rory.

I can completely understand Richard’s fears and frustrations for his very bright daughter… she’s stuck. But does Richard see Logan as part of the problem? Would he rather Rory not be dating anyone, or just that Rory return to something more focused, Logan or no Logan?

Why Does Logan Give Rory a Birkin?

In ‘Welcome to the Dollhouse‘, Logan gives Rory a Birkin Bag – a bag that has a wait list of up to a year and is ridiculously expensive. Rory has no idea that it’s such an expensive and sought-after purse, but Logan knows his sister, Honor, will fill her in.

Why did Logan get this purse for Rory? What does it mean? Do you think Honor suggested it to him?

Can Rory Work That Much Magic?

In ‘We’ve Got Magic to Do‘, Rory manages to turn around an under-filled event into a success. She takes a boring DAR event and themes it to a 1944 movie, Hollywood Canteen, and has the event detailed right down to time-period-specific silverware. Do you think it possible that Rory has managed all this in just one week?
