Is Dean Obsessive?

In The Gilmore Girls Companion, the author suggests that Dean stalking Rory on the bus in ‘Cinnamon’s Wake‘ could foreshadow his future inability to let her go. I think this is a very interesting insight.

Dean, on the whole, is an “all in” kind of guy. I mean, building Rory the car? That’s over-the-top, even for a couple much older than they are. The bracelet is much more appropriate. But even then, he is the one who noticed when it was gone.

Can you think of other instances of Dean being an obsessive personality? Does his obsessiveness concern just Rory, or is it a part of his personality?

What Would You Ask After a Deer Hitting?

This is a perhaps more oddball discussion question, but here goes anyway. It’s all about having fun with these discussions! After Rory was hit by the deer in ‘The Deer Hunters‘, Lane was at a loss for what to ask Rory. So, she asked “Was it a four-way stop?”

I’m curious, what would YOU have asked Rory?

I think that I would have asked if the deer was ok, though that’s a bit of an obvious answer. Perhaps the fact that Lane didn’t ask this question is telling of her train of thought!

BTW, Aaron Berman, writer of The Gilmore Girls Companion, has been following along with our discussions and adding more behind-the-scenes thoughts, discussions and quotes that didn’t make it into his book. I hope you head on over there to subscribe to his blog to see more Gilmore Girls info!

Update I had Lorelai instead of Lane – that’s what I get for writing when sick!

Luke & Lorelai: Best First Date

Ology.com put together a Valentine’s Day list celebrating the Best and Worst First Dates on TV, including first and foremost as “best” the first date between Luke & Lorelai:

Written-In-The-Stars-Screencaps-java-junkie-luke-and-lorelai-3037435-1024-768.jpg

After seven years of friendship (and a couple near misses), grumpy diner owner Luke and chatty Lorelai finally go out on a date. But considering the foundation these two have built up, it’s no surprise that this isn’t a casual date: Luke reveals that he’s kept a horoscope that Lorelai jokingly wrote down for him–”You will meet an annoying woman today. Give her coffee and she will go away.”–in his wallet for seven years. “I’m all in,” he tells her seriously. Seeing as the date ends at his apartment, obviously things go well. Then, in true Gilmore fashion, the whole town finds out and takes sides in the event of a Luke/Lorelai break-up. Still, they mean well, and we were so delighted to see these crazy kids finally make it work.

“I’m all in.” So classic. So amazing.

Was Kirk Too Over-the-Top?

In The Gilmore Girls Companion, there’s a great story about how Sean Gunn came to be a regular on the series, though originally he just played a small part. I won’t give it away, but at the end of the interview, Sean reflects:

sean_gunn_01.jpg

“Sometimes I watch the very first scene I ever did on the show and I’m like, ‘God, that was pretty good; how did I get so over the top after that?”

Do you think that was true? Did Kirk become *too* over-the-top? Or was he just spot-on quirky?

Discussion & Full Video

Summary: Haddie makes a life changing decision; Crosby and Jasmine begin to have relationship trouble; Drew surprises his mom when he tells her some news about his relationship with his father.

  • Do you like Jasmine less after this episode?
  • Do you think Jasmine is controlling?
  • Will Crosby and Jasmine get married?
  • Does Sarah love her ex still?
  • Are you glad that Adam & Kristina relented?
  • Why did Amber go to see her father play?
  • Do you believe that Seth is sober?

Here’s the big question of the episode for you Gilmore Girls fans – Does Seth remind you of Christopher? How is the Sarah/Seth relationship like or not like that of Lorelai/Christopher?

Lorelai the Feminist?

As promised, today we begin the journey to re-watch the Gilmore Girls series and discuss things along the way.

In the Pilot episode, Rory describes how she got her name, saying…

“She was lying in the hospital thinking about how men name boys after themselves all the time, you know, so why couldn’t women? She says her feminism just kind of took over. Though personally I think a lot of Demerol also went into that decision.”

Do you think Lorelai is a feminist? Not just in this instance, but overall? Why or why not?

Feminism refers to movements aimed at establishing and defending equal political, economic, and social rights and equal opportunities for women.

This is my 4th time going through the series on GilmoreNews.com, though each time has been different. We’ve had some great discussions, and hopefully more fantastic discussions to come!

Given the recent release of The Gilmore Girls Companion, I will try to draw inspiration from the pages therein for some fun discussions. This first discussion was prompted by one of the quotes Aaron Berman brought forth in his overview of this episode.

I may, at other times, revisit old topics. For the most part, discussions will be new. And if you have any episode or topic you want to put forth a question on, let me know!

Alexis Bledel Shares Thoughts on Rory

Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore on Gilmore Girls) is starring this month in the off Broadway play, Love, Loss and What I Wore. Last week, Broadway.com sat down with her for a few photos and an interview.

Alexis talked about how she got used to working with a live audience, and how satisfying it is. She also talked a bit about Gilmore Girls:

Do you have any clothing-related memories that would work in the show?
We actually talked about that in rehearsal, and my high school uniform, a khaki pleated skirt with a blue wool blazer, came to mind. I loved it because I didn’t have to figure out what to wear every day. I’m not really good at figuring out what goes together and it takes me a long time to get it right. By the time I was a senior, though, I hated it and wanted to burn it after graduation. A year later, I started Gilmore Girls and I had to wear Rory’s school uniform for four years. Hers was much cuter than mine, but I couldn’t believe I was back in uniform.

Definitely trying! After this, Alexis shared some background into how Rory was dressed on the show and how it is important for clothes to be very colourful on the show so they “pop” on TV. She was given many of the clothes when the series ended.

When Gilmore Girls ended in 2007, Rory was following Barack Obama on the campaign trail. What do you imagine she would be up to these days?
I think she would be working at a newspaper, probably in Washington or New York. She was so interested in journalism and I think eventually she’d travel abroad. She looked up to [ABC news correspondent] Christiane Amanpour, who’s always out on location and getting to the nitty gritty.

Do you think Rory would have travelled abroad for her journalism career?
