The Baseball Cap

Following along in our discussions based on insights from The Gilmore Girls Companion, I wanted to talk about Luke’s Hat. As the author notes, Lorelai later reveals that she believes the hat to be a barometer of Luke’s feelings about her. When he wore it, he was into her. When he didn’t, things were in trouble.

Do you think the writers intentionally wrote this small detail into the series at this point? Or did it become an opportunistic object to imbue with significance later in the series?

Why Does Luke Dislike Stars Hollow Events?

In The Gilmore Girls Companion, the author hypothesizes about why Luke appears to dislike Stars Hollow events & overall “public-spiritedness”. Our first glimpse of this is in ‘Love and War and Snow‘, when the first town meeting happened.

The author believes that Luke is bitter about Stars Hollow events because his father was a Battle of Stars Hollow re-enactor and now his father is dead.

Do you think this is the case? Why is it that Luke dislikes town merriment?

Luke & Lorelai: Best First Date

Ology.com put together a Valentine’s Day list celebrating the Best and Worst First Dates on TV, including first and foremost as “best” the first date between Luke & Lorelai:

After seven years of friendship (and a couple near misses), grumpy diner owner Luke and chatty Lorelai finally go out on a date. But considering the foundation these two have built up, it’s no surprise that this isn’t a casual date: Luke reveals that he’s kept a horoscope that Lorelai jokingly wrote down for him–”You will meet an annoying woman today. Give her coffee and she will go away.”–in his wallet for seven years. “I’m all in,” he tells her seriously. Seeing as the date ends at his apartment, obviously things go well. Then, in true Gilmore fashion, the whole town finds out and takes sides in the event of a Luke/Lorelai break-up. Still, they mean well, and we were so delighted to see these crazy kids finally make it work.

“I’m all in.” So classic. So amazing.

Luke & Lorelai a “Best TV Couple of All Time”

Luke & Lorelai made the list of TV Guide’s “Best TV Couples of All Time,” coming in on the list of 25 at #15.

“How can you not be with a guy who serves you breakfast (and lots and lots of coffee) every morning? Luke and Lorelai were believable as sparring partners, and even moreso as a couple. Things unraveled toward the end, but the series finale gave us hope that L&L were on their way to rekindling their romance. ”

Gilmore Girls’ Memorable Love Triangles

Beliefnet recently put together a list of the “Top 10 Movie/TV Love Triangles” in honor of the Eclipse release. The list includes, however, an homage to Gilmore Girls… to the TWO major love triangles of the series.

Rory, Dean, and Jess from ‘Gilmore Girls.’

Watching Rory fall for beautiful boy Dean, her first love, was so sweet, but when the brilliant, bad-boy Jess came to Stars Hollow, he took romance to a whole other level, and turned out to be a better, if not more tumultuous match for Rory.

Lorelai, Max, and Luke from ‘Gilmore Girls.

Luke might be perpetually rough around the edges, but his gruff yet utterly vulnerable charm was leagues above clean cut, English teacher Max. It just took Lorelai forever to realize it.

I’m surprised the latter was Max and not Christopher!!

Why Doesn’t Luke Want to Sponsor?

In ‘Let Me Hear Your Balalaikas Ringing Out‘, a bunch of cute middle school girls come into Luke’s Diner to ask him to sponsor their new soccer team. They sell their offer well, saying he’d get to be on their jersey and wouldn’t have to come to their games. Luke says it’s “not his thing” (before Lorelai gets him to change his mind).

Why do you think, with his sports background, Luke would say this is “not his thing”? Just because they are girls? Or kids? Or… ?
