Why Does Lorelai Redo the Garage?

In ‘Jews and Chinese Food’, Lorelai redoes her garage to be her “special alone space” now that Luke’s boat is no longer in storage there. The garage has always been a place for ‘crap’, for storage, so why does Lorelai need a “special alone space” now? As Luke points out, “you got a whole house of special alone space.”

Lorelai argued, “I never park my car in here! I have never, ever parked my car in here, Luke! And you know that! But I come home to this big, huge, suddenly empty space, and I thought I would try to do something nice, so it wasn’t just a giant hole of depression sitting out here!”

Was that it? Or was there more to it?

The Luck of Weddings

In ‘Say Something’, we have the sad official break-up between Luke & Lorelai. This occurs as the result of events at Emily & Richard’s “wedding” – the vow renewal. This is a coincidence because Luke & Lorelai first started really hitting it off “officially” at Liz & TJs wedding.

So, do you think this connection was on purpose for the writers? So it began, so it also can end?

Does Lorelai Know She’s Serious About Luke?

In ‘Come Home’, Lorelai spends the night with Luke, going to bed at his early bedtime because he has to get up at 4am for deliveries. Her logic: every night they spend apart because of the deliveries is a night they could have been together. Awww! So, Lorelai obviously wants to be with Luke every night…. but do you think she realizes yet how serious she is about Luke? Or is she just going with the flow?

Why Won't Lorelai Take Free Coffee?

In ‘We Got Us a Pippi Virgin‘, Luke tries to offer Lorelai free coffee at the diner, now that they are dating. Lorelai feels uncomfortable with that. Lorelai says, “Luke, this is your business. I’ve always paid, and I always should pay.” They settle on no tips, saying it would be “weird.” (I don’t usually tip for just coffee, do you? At least not every time!)

Do you think Lorelai should have accepted the free coffee? At least sometimes? I know I do! I have a cafe I visit regularly (I’m a coffee-aholic) and they often offer me a free coffee or sweet treat just to say thanks. I’m not above accepting it. ;)

Why Does Lorelai Want to Delay Luke's Divorce?

In ‘Afterboom‘, Luke and Lorelai run into each other at the Mailboxes, Etc. where Luke is getting ready to finalize his divorce with the notary on hand. Lorelai says it’s not a very dignified place to finalize a divorce and wants to make sure he’s not rushing into the decision.

So, why does Lorelai want to make sure Luke doesn’t rush into his divorce? Is it to make sure Luke is making the right decision? Does she believe Luke could be happy?

Luke Steps Up, Husband-Like?

gilmore-girls-season-4-10.jpgIn ‘The Incredible Shrinking Lorelais‘, Lorelai falls apart because things at the Inn are not going smoothly. Of course, she’s not the only one things are falling apart for, but we’ll just focus on her. Because here it’s Luke who comes to Lorelai’s rescue. After yelling at Sookie and melting down in general, Lorelai runs to Luke. Who earlier she had said she wanted to have a “talk over something” with a dinner (poor Luke, do you think he got the wrong idea?). And it’s Luke who helps put things back together for Lorelai.

Luke’s there to offer her emotional support as well as financial support. Even after he probably went to mush thinking about the dinner and listening to Lorelai say she “wishes she were married” for someone to help her in these times. Well, he’s that guy (and yet he’s not)!

A funny side note: this is the first episode where Rory & Lorelai don’t appear in any scenes together!

Does Lorelai Realize Her Feelings for Luke?

In ‘In the Clamor and the Clangor‘, Luke tells Lorelai that he’s moved in with Nicole, which distresses Lorelai. She deflects, saying she’s simply mad because he waited 3 weeks to tell her, and friends don’t do that. Lorelai complains about this to Sookie as well. Later, Luke is anything but apologetic. He gets mad at Lorelai for thinking everything is her business and for making him feel guilty when he “owes Lorelai” nothing.

gilmore-girls-3-season-08.jpg

Later, when the two “make up” a little in their desire to destroy the town bells, Lorelai is secretly pleased to discover that almost nothing has moved from Luke’s apartment. She stays quiet at first, but later does pass her judgement.

Lorelai: You watch her TV, you eat her food, you keep stuff in a duffel bag at her house… you’re a rude guest, not her boyfriend!

Luke: Husband.

Lorelai: Whole other discussion.

So, is Luke right to be mad at Lorelai about this? About Lorelai making his relationship with Nicole a “husband and wife and Lorelai” situation? Or is he mad because Lorelai has valid points?

Of course, all of this could have been resolved if the Reverend hadn’t walked in on the argument, perhaps, interrupting Lorelai from having to answer why she cares and why she doesn’t want Luke to move. *sigh* Well, at least perhaps Lorelai discovered something about her own feelings here…
