Does Lorelai Date Jason to Spite Emily?

In ‘Ted Koppel’s Big Night Out‘, Lorelai admits to being unsure about dating Jason (Digger) Stiles because he’s now her father’s partner, not her type, is from her ‘hood’, and doesn’t want to upset things with Emily. However, she does seem pleased by his continued attentions.

Lorelai had initially turned Digger down for dinner, saying she didn’t find him “repulsive,” but that there were too many things against the relationship. However, after Emily & Richard have a big fight at the Yale/Harvard game, resulting from Lorelai asking about Pennilyn Lott and Richard needing to confess to secretly seeing her once a year for 39 years, Emily blows up at Lorelai. And that drives Lorelai to instantly call Jason…

So, did Lorelai call Jason out of interest – now that Emily is already mad at her – our out of spite, to make Emily mad?

Was Emily in a Panic About Trix?

gilmore-girls-season-3-22.jpgIn ‘That’ll Do, Pig‘, we again come to the troubled relationship between Trix & Emily. However, in this episode we see Emily take a stand… over green beans.

Specifically, Trix has just announced that she’s planning on moving back to Hartford from London in order to be close to her family. Richard assures her that he and Emily will wait on her – day and night – for whatever she needs. At that, Emily is in pure shock. So when the next course is ready to come, Emily says “I’m not ready,” and proceeds to take an hour and a half to eat the remaining green beens she was allotted 12 minutes to eat.

Is Emily doing this to piss off Trix or is she simply in a state of complete shock, not knowing what else to do but stall… and stall anything?

Why Can't Emily be Happy for Rory?

In ‘Presenting Lorelai Gilmore‘, Rory is “presented” to society. This is something Lorelai never did – she hated all that society stuff – but it’s something Rory wanted to do… in part, to please Emily.

Emily has gone crazy shopping for Rory’s “coming out”, buying things for every contingency. She’s obviously considering this a very big deal… and I wonder how much if that is Emily “making up” for the fact that Lorelai never had her own “coming out.”

At the ball, Emily is critical of everything. Perhaps she’s just worried about Rory’s “social status”, but I’m not sure. When Rory is presented, Emily just looks sad. She says to Lorelai, “That should have been you up there. Nothing’s turning out the way it was supposed to.”

Why is Emily sad, when Rory is doing everything that Emily ever wanted Lorelai to do? Is part of that the fight that Emily had with Richard about how he feels he’s being transitioned out at work?

Why Does Trix Dislike Emily?

In ‘The Third Lorelai‘, it’s clear that there is quite a bit of tension between Emily & her mother-in-law, Trix (the first Lorelai). At this point, we have no idea why that could be. We simply know that Trix enjoys sending Emily on useless errands and gives gifts that Emily hates.

Meanwhile, Trix praises Lorelai for being self-sufficient and witty. It’s almost like praising Lorelai is a dig against Emily. Do you think this is true? What is it about Emily that Trix doesn’t like?

And, do you think Trix offered money to Lorelai for Rory’s education as something generous, or to spite Emily? And when Lorelai becomes confused about how money would alter her relationship with Rory, Trix reneges her offer and blames Emily for Lorelai’s immaturity. Crazy!

Is Emily More Understanding Now?

In ‘I’m a Kayak, Hear Me Roar,’ we see a big shift in Emily Gilmore. Richard isn’t the only one shaken up by his heart attack – it seems Emily has had to face some fears of her own. One of those appears to be her independence and how life would be if Richard were to die.

Emily, while on one hand babying Richard to make sure his diet and health will be perfect, on the other hand is struggling to keep up his finances. Richard is avoiding work, but his corporate taxes need to be done. In a panic, Emily calls Lorelai for help.

Lorelai drops the “Chris and I broke up” news to Emily, but Emily is gracious about it. She moves on. Very un-Emily. And later, a little tipsy, Emily talks about how life is a canoe and that, with Richard “dropping the paddle”, her canoe is spinning in circles. I think she’s saying she feels lost without Richard by her side. Meanwhile, Emily nearly praises Lorelai, calling her a “kayak” instead – because she can do ‘all this’ (life, business) on her own.

For perhaps the first time, Emily is looking at Lorelai and seeing her independence as an asset to her. She respects Lorelai more. Perhaps this is why Emily is not freaking out about the break-up with Christopher? Perhaps she’s realized that Lorelai doesn’t need to be married to do well with her life?

For me, Season 7 provided some amazing moments between Emily & Lorelai, and I was proud to see their relationship develop. What do you think?

And they get… a painting?

In the episode ‘Knit, People, Knit‘, we start off with Chris and Lorelai over for dinner with Richard, Emily & Rory. The whole big Gilmore gang. Richard & Lorelai have a gift for the newly-wedded couple… and it’s a painting. The painting, by real artist Kiki Smith, is called “Wolf Girl”. The original painting was done by Kiki in 1999 for her series “Blue Prints.”

What research I’ve done indicates that Kiki was known for her “reflection on human existence” and on “women’s anonymous creativity throughout history.” In addition, she covers “rites of passage” in her art – perhaps rites like marriage. I’m not an art critic, so I don’t know what “Wolf Girl” is supposed to say about Lorelai & Christopher. Do you have ideas?

But I will ask – if Emily & Richard were going to give Luke & Lorelai a house… what does the painting say in comparison?

Did Lorelai Want Emily to be Mad?

In ‘Lorelai’s First Cotillion,’ Lorelai confesses to not having told Emily directly about her breakup with Luke. She’s worried Emily will be mean about the news. However, when Lorelai drops the news, Emily disinterestedly says “that’s too bad,” while Richard only says “Hmm.”

The conversation moves so quickly from the topic of Luke that Lorelai seems almost affronted. Mad that they didn’t fight her. She tries to bring it up, to get it all into the open, but Emily & Richard say they’ve moved on. Lorelai gets even more offended. Later, at home, Lorelai admits that she may need her parents’ freakouts to “know I’m doing what I wanna do”.

Does Lorelai need Emily’s anger to justify her actions towards Luke? Should Lorelai be questioning her likes and dislikes because of her new revelation that they may be based on doing whatever displeases her parents? And how, if at all, does all of this lead to Lorelai returning to Christopher?
