Vanessa Marano to star in “Switched at Birth” Series

Vanessa Marano (April Nardini on Gilmore Girls) will be starring in a new ABC Family series, Switched at Birth, which was just picked up for a full season.

The series will co-star Katie Leclerc, as the child ‘switched at birth’ with Vanessa’s character. Just like with the classic Parent Trap films, one girl is rich and one is poor. In this case, the families decide to merge under one roof.

Last we heard, Vanessa was tapped for what sounds like a different show at ABC Family, so perhaps that show fell through and this one was picked up instead. I know sometimes a network will shift a well-liked actor around in pilot-filming stage.

Vanessa Marano & Scott Cohen in Marc Jacobs Pilot

Although we have word that Scott Cohen (Max Medina on Gilmore Girls) was cast in a lead role of the USA Network pilot Necessary Roughness, there is also news of him being cast in the ABC Family pilot being done by Marc Jacobs. Also set to star in the same series is Vanessa Marano (April Nardini on Gilmore Girls).

Leading the cast of the “Untitled Michael Jacobs Project” will be Vanessa Marano (“Dexter,” “Gilmore Girls”) as “Bailey” and Chloe Bridges (“Camp Rock: The Final Jam”) as “Rachel,” the two daughters of parents played by Stephanie Childers (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and Scott Cohen (“Gilmore Girls”). Valerie Tian (“Juno”) has also been tapped to play one of the girls’ best friends. In the comedy, a young dad recently laid off from his architecture firm begins to identify with and mentor his underdog middle daughter, while his veterinarian wife shares a closer bond with their Type-A older daughter. The two philosophies on parenting and life highlight differences within the family.

Usually an actor won’t lead in two television series at one time, so I’m not sure if Scott will proceed with both. There’s also the potential that one or both pilots will not make it to television.

Vanessa Marano recently held a lead role on Scoundrels, which sadly did not do as well as was hoped – though it wasn’t a complete bust. The 8-episode order has all aired but there has not been news of whether there will, or will not, be a season 2.
