ABC Family Renews Bunheads and Switched at Birth

Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls, has produced another quirky hit with her new show, Bunheads. Bunheads is a comedy-drama that  centers on a Las Vegas showgirl who gets spontaneously gets married and  ends teaching with her new mother-in-law at her ballet school. Taking place in a fictional small coastal town, Paradise,  Bunheads stars Gilmore Girls alum, Kelly Bishop, who played Emily Gilmore. The show as has been praised for its charm and witty banter. (Something we Gilmore fans know a lot about!) Bunheads made its series debut June 11, 2012 and ran for ten episodes.

ABC Family also renewed Switched at Birth,  which stars Vanessa Marano, who played April on Gilmore Girls. Switched at Birth drama revolves around two teenagers who were switched at birth and grew up in very different environments. The series debut was the highest rated show for ABC Family to date.  Switched at Birth returned for the second half of season one September 3, 2012 and the second season will premiere in the winter along with Bunheads.

Vanessa Marano at Emmy Awards

Vanessa Marano (April Nardini on Gilmore Girls), now 18, attended the Emmy awards on Sunday night, where past Gilmore Girls co-star Melissa McCarthy won her first Emmy.

Aside from all her television and movie work, Vanessa Marano will also be making a guest spot in Cookin’ With Gas at The Groundlings, an all-improv theatre in LA, on September 29th.

Vanessa Marano to Guest Star on CSI

Vanessa Marano (April Nardini on Gilmore Girls) is heading to CSI for a guest starring role. The series returns on September 21st, though it doesn’t look like Vanessa makes her guest appearance until a few episodes in.

Vanessa will play Samantha, the estranged daughter of an ex-con named Frank (guest star Johnny Messner), who lost touch with her. Samantha is now a street gang groupie and her dad is fighting to get her back.

Vanessa currently stars in ABC Family’s Switched at Birth.

Vanessa Marano’s “Switched at Birth” A Hit

Vanessa Marano (April Nardini on Gilmore Girls) currently stars in the recently-premiered new series on ABC Family, Switched at Birth. The series was recently given additional episodes for the first season, bringing it up to 32 episodes for Season 1, with the remainder to air in January 2012. A good prospect for the series. Vanessa herself was nominated for a Teen Choice Award for her role, though she did not win for ‘Choice Summer TV Star’.

Vanessa recently talked all about the show, including how she feels about learning sign language, here. There was one Gilmore Girls question, which I’ll share:

Question: Do you keep in touch with anyone from Gilmore Girls?
Vanessa Marano: I still keep in touch with Scott Cohen (Max Medina).

Do you find it surprising that Max & Vanessa hit it off on set?

On the Set: Vanessa Marano on how she feels her outfit helped her land Bay’s role.

Though the premise of the series is a little “blah” sounding (Parent Trap, anyone?), the show apparently becomes a fantastic drama with relatable characters. You’ll be amused, I’m sure, by how the “switched at birth” part came into play. Vanessa’s character, Bay, does a DNA sample and finds out her parents are not her parents… sound like April to you?!

Here’s Vanessa introducing you to the series:

There’s also a great interview with Vanessa here talking about her character and some of the overarching themes of the new series.

Vanessa Marano’s “Switched at Birth” This Week

Vanessa Marano (April Nardini on Gilmore Girls) will be starring in a new ABC Family series, Switched at Birth, which already has a full season pick-up. The series will premiere this week on June 6th! Here’s a preview of the new series:

Switched at Birth tells the story of two teenage girls who discover they were accidentally switched as newborns in the hospital. Bay Kennish (Vanessa) grew up in a wealthy family with two parents and a brother, while Daphne Vasquez, who lost her hearing at an early age due to a case of meningitis, grew up with a single mother in a working class neighborhood. Things come to a dramatic head when both families meet and struggle to learn how to live together for the sake of the girls.
