A new round of Amazon pilots will go up on March 17th and you (not network executives) can “greenlight” Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino’s latest project, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and put it into production for a full series.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is set in 1958 and centers on a wife and mother named Miriam “Midge” Maisel, played by Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards), living in Manhattan who finds she has a talent for stand-up comedy but faces an almost exclusively male profession; she finds work in the nightclubs of Greenwich Village with her journey eventually leading her to the pinnacle of a stand-up comic’s career — Johnny Carson’s couch.
This appears to be loosely based on the early career of Joan Rivers, a pioneering female comic whose trajectory followed a similarly difficult path.
Of note in the cast is Alex Borstein, a Gilmore Girls alum who played dual roles as Drella and Miss Celine. It also stars Keiko Agena’s favorite actor Tony Shalhoub (Monk) as Midge’s father, Marin Hinkle (Speechless) as Midge’s mother, and Michael Zegen (Boardwalk Empire) as Midge’s husband.
