Would Melissa McCarthy Return to Gilmore Girls?

Share

With ongoing speculation about whether Netflix (ok, Amy Sherman-Palladino) will be pursuing a second instalment of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, we’ve heard from many of the cast about whether or not they would return. So far, the commentary has been an unequivocal ‘yes’ or a softer ‘if the story is right,’ which I can only imagine it would be, helmed by Amy.

Melissa McCarthy recently chimed in on the topic, with her regular wit, and the whole “ending” with the last four words.

“I had been waiting a long time to know, because [creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] had always said she knows exactly how it ends, but now it’s like, “Is that the last four words?

No [I wouldn’t return as Sookie], but I would come back as Lorelai! And that is a challenge to Lauren Graham” {insert comedic evil eye}

The commentary did get me thinking, however. If Melissa McCarthy were to return, what would that look like? It was clear in A Year in the Life that Sookie’s life had moved beyond the Dragonfly. Of course, this storyline was created in part due to the limited availability of Melissa McCarthy, but the storyline could have been “hey, I was gone for a bit, but now I’m back,” while instead we were presented with a Sookie whose passions in life had shifted. And that’s ok.

So, would there be a role for the new Sookie in future episodes of Gilmore Girls? Being less central to the Dragonfly, I would guess any “role” would be just another bit part, and not a substantial story arc like we would come to expect of a main character. What do you think?

Here are some recent photos of Melissa McCarthy, who incidentally just had a show picked up by TV Land for a two season run (at least)! The show, Nobodies, was created with her husband, Ben Falcone, and will star Hugh Davidson, Larry Dorf and Rachel Ramras as three lesser-known comedians trying to land their famous friend a feature film script in order to help their own careers. Melissa was also named Favourite Comedic Movie Actress at the People’s Choice Awards! Congratulations to Melissa for both great achievements!

    “Installment” has two “l”s.

    Actually, at the end of ‘Fall,’ it’s made clear that Sookie did NOT like or want those other chefs in her kitchen. To me, this was the start of Sookie re-taking ownership. Plus, with the bigger and posher annex to the Dragonfly, Sookie would have more of an executive role which I think she’d enjoy. She did train her staff very well! Maybe she could spend 50% of her time on the farm and 50% in town? That way she wouldn’t have to be all four episodes… but we need more Sookie next time!

    You guys are awesome. I am Canadian, even though for most of my work I try to write with American spelling. Sometimes my Canadian-ness slips through ;)

    ;-) so funny – your comments and Melissa :-) – but seriously: I love Sookie – the scene was too short – I need more, more, more…., Sookie.

    Melissa always gives the best answers. She is just amazing and I love her sooooo much.

    When Sookie was talking to Lorelai about the new weird thing she’d been doing for the past two years I got the sense it wasn’t as fulfilling as she thought it out to be. Now, with the inn expanding I would imagine Sookie would strongly consider to move back to civilization and take over as the chef (I mean, Lorelai kept her parking spot untouched and everything).
