Netflix is Open to More Gilmore Girls

Share

When the Gilmore Girls revival was first announced, the fan response was enormous. It was bigger than I think anyone expected. As we saw on the Luke’s Diner Day, more people turned out to interact with Gilmore Girls than anyone could have dreamed possible. As the day arrived and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was released in 4-parts on Netflix, I think we were all left wanting more. Not because we are ungrateful or unhappy with certain plots (ok, a little), but because we love Gilmore Girls.

Many of us, myself included, were clamouring for MORE Gilmore Girls the second we finished “Fall,” as could be expected with such a cliffhanger. Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said that Netflix would be open to more Gilmore Girls:

“We’re definitely open to it if Amy is. It’s a surprisingly international show and we’re thrilled with how people have enjoyed the new show and introducing the old show to an entire new generation of viewers.”

This statement leads me to believe that Gilmore Girls fared particularly well in International markets, and that this could be a rare occurrence for Netflix. An opportunity, one could say. We’ve seen that Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life was already one of Netflix’s most popular shows, so it would be smart to continue that momentum.

Many of the cast have already expressed their willingness to return to Gilmore Girls, particularly Scott Patterson, who has always been vocal about giving this community more of what it loves, and everyone has been really careful about not calling Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life an “end.”

Lauren Graham once said she would do “whatever’s best for the project,” and if the material were good, she would come back again to reprise her role as Lorelai Gilmore.

Amy Sherman-Palladino has been more circumspect in her own responses, since the revival project for Amy & husband Dan Palladino took up a year and a half, versus the three-month filming window of the cast. It’s immersive. But, she’s also said that “life only closes doors when you drop dead,” so perhaps given a bit of space, creatively, she will circle back around and open up some new Gilmore doors for us. As always, it’s about finding a story that inspires. This time around, that spark was the loss of Edward Herrmann / Richard Gilmore, a theme around which the revival was woven. Next time, if we do get a next time, will be up to Amy.

I would think that a second revival, or a continuation every year or two, could be more fun for Amy & Dan, from a creative perspective. In this revival, they were “locked” into an ending they had envisioned many many years ago, with a strong story arc that locked each main character into a certain path. Without these restrictions, perhaps we could see a more dynamic and creative Gilmore Girls, if it were to return again. One perhaps invigorated by the Final Four Words that left us all hanging.

Let’s all keep the momentum alive! My gut tells me that Amy will need space to find her story, so it will be up to us to keep up enough momentum online and on Netflix to make round 2 a reality! As Petal (Kirk) once put it, let’s Kick Up A Rumpus!

It could be anyone’s child. Just because we didn’t see her sleep with Paul, Jess or anyone else for that matter doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. The fact that Rory did not say who the father is leaves that door open.

I loved the first 7 seasons so much, to this day I watch them over and over. It was so great to have the 4 new episodes, I love the writing and the cast so incredibly much. Gilmore girls has gotten me through the roughest times of my life (I know that sounds cheesy) but I sincerely love the cast and everything about the show. Please bring us much more!! And can you also put it out on DVD/blu-Ray?!
    Thanks!!

Please give us more! I hate to be greedy but it was sheer bliss to see all the characters again and by the actors all showing up for the four part series it shows that it is not just us fans who are in love with the Show,it seems everyone wanted to visit stars hollows again.
    So please Amy hear this.

While I will probably watch it, I won’t be awaiting it with bated breath, nor will I be staying up to watch it at midnight, as I did with AYTL.

If the storylines and character development continue to be as stagnant as they were in AYTL, then I say please just leave it alone and let us enjoy the original series. S7 was far superior to the mess they made with AYTL, or even a good portion of S6.

The chemistry was gone. It’s was almost like a different set of people. This was not a family show, or the message I want to send to girls. Lauren Graham play a part in parenthood of single mother of 2 I think. I the the revival was just the opposite. I think she said something about producing or something, she didn’t come across like she loved luke, in the show. I think she is probably happier being a wife and stepmother.

I’m glad Netflix didn’t close the door completely to more Gilmore Girls.
I’m honestly fine either way – of course, more is always better.
I completely trust Amy to do what she thinks the show and its characters deserve and I’m sure whatever she decides is the right choice.

Would LOVE more!!!!! But I understand if Amy feels that this should be the end. It was really well done and the cast is and always will be one of my favorites. Would love to see how Rory handles being a single mom.
