Emily Kuroda Understood Mrs. Kim but Related More to Lane

The Boston Globe interviewed Emily Kuroda who reprises her role as Mrs. Kim on the upcoming Gilmore Girls revival.  She is currently in Boston performing in Huntington Theatre Company’s production of “Tiger Style!”, a comedy that examines race, parenting, and success.

Emily only appears in one of the four Gilmore Girls revival movies and revealed that at the table read:

“…it was heaven, it was so nice. Everybody’s the same, everybody’s so supportive.”

Emily also commented on the success of some of her co-stars:

“A lot of them have their own series now, but they still came to do our four little shows of ‘Gilmore.’ One of them has a private jet now. But he said he bought it used.”

(Could she be referring to Jared Padalecki?)

Emily said she understood Mrs. Kim due to the harsh upbringing that generation of Korean-Americans experienced with the Korean War and everything else, but personally she related more to Lane:

“My mother came from Japan, and I really didn’t understand her often. Now that I’m older, I do. I think I understand some of Lane’s confusion and getting mixed messages as far as what Mrs. Kim thought she was saying, and what Lane was hearing. That’s not an abnormal thing. It’s a generational problem.”

Because of the under-representation of Asians on American television, Emily was very happy to have had a chance to be on Gilmore Girls:

“Seriously, how many times do you see Asian-American characters that have an actual family, feelings? You don’t see them love and be sad and have all the human emotions. I think that “Gilmore Girls” is one of the very, very few where we were offered a chance to explore these characters multidimensionally.”

    How awesome!

And to think Emily considers the four episodes not that a big a deal for some of the actors haha

(So, Jared has a jet? Maybe Matt?)

Mrs. Kim was an authentic and inspiring character on the show. Emily Kuroda is correct in her assertion of The character. I liked mrs. Kim as a young girl, but now as a mom, I understand her. And, of course, the cricket bat! I’m looking forward to her reprisal of the role.

Mrs. Kim has always reminded me of my mom, super religious and strict, but a puppy dog at heart.

My guess would be Danny Strong having a jet.
