Emily in a T-Shirt? Yes, It’s Important

In the new Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life trailer, a lot of fuss has been made about Emily Gilmore wearing a t-shirt. A very un-Emily t-shirt. Which is truly the whole point. Emily Gilmore is mourning. She’s struggling to find herself. The decluttering of her home to remove anything that doesn’t bring her “joy” is just one aspect of that.

Kelly Bishop, who plays Emily Gilmore, and costume designer Brenda Maben recently sat down with Vanity Fair to talk about the t-shirt. Brenda claims she was shocked to see the clip of Emily wearing the t-shirt appear in the trailer, since it is a rather significant moment:

“I didn’t know that they had let a little bit of that out of the bag. I mean, you could have hung me up by my fingernails, and I wouldn’t have told you [about the casual wear].”

Kelly Bishop has previously been interviewed talking about how she wanted to show that, in many ways, Emily hadn’t changed. The hair, the clothes, all of it had to be exactly the same. The series emphasizes that, for Emily, change found her instead. And it didn’t happen immediately.

Brenda notes:

“When someone loses a spouse that they’ve been very close to and been married to for years and years and years, the way you think, the way you dress, you don’t change that immediately. There’s a mourning period.”

Kelly Bishop also chimes in on the unusual choice to put Emily in a t-shirt and jeans, which plays into a ‘Moment,’ perhaps the one we see a hint of when Lorelai enters the scene:

“There’s a very specific reason, which is very—how can I say—there’s kind of a pop-culture reference to it. It will all become very clear very quickly once the scene starts, and it will make a lot of people laugh.”

The Candie’s t-shirt that Emily is wearing in the scene was hand made, with permission from Candies to use the logo. Amazing.

I was already curious about the t-shirt (and jeans).
Adding Kelly’s words I keep trying to come up with something to explain it haha

Sooooo looking forward to this revival.

Is emily ready to change, and try to fit in with her daughter and granddaughter, and stop trying to change them.

I wonder what, if anything, the Candie’s connection is about. That brand was more popular in the 90’s.

Hey, there’s a time when you’re widowed that you just don’t care about a lot of things. The grieving. I’m excited to see how everything plays out. Probably Emily will be nicer and then she will resort back to her snotty, snippy attitude!
