Milo Ventimiglia, set to reprise his role as Jess in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, recently spoke with Collider about what it was like to return to Stars Hollow and become Jess again. Being friends with Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, and a bit supporter of Gilmore Girls, which he always credits as helping get his career going, Milo was among the first to know that a revival was in the works:
I got a phone call from Amy [Sherman-Palladino], I think it was sometime in October of last year, saying that they were gearing up to do it and how and why it was all happening. I’ve stayed close to Dan and Amy, over the years since I left the show, and I’ve always said to them that whenever they call me for anything they need, I’ll be there, which is funny ‘cause that’s the opening lyrics or the song. So, she called and said they were doing it, and I said, “Great! I don’t know where I’m going to be, but let me know and we’ll work it out. Of course, I’ll be there!”
In the interview, Milo says that who Jess became was “very much on the page,” so it was easy to get into the character and it made sense to him, although he did revisit the last three episodes Jess had appeared in, to “see where his head was at” and to understand the dynamics between the characters. And still, the revival brought surprises for where Jess is at:
I definitely went back and looked at the last three episodes that Jess was in, just to see where his head was at when he last left and to understand the dynamic between Rory and Luke and just his own journey in life. I was surprised about where he was, and then where he is when we pick back up with him.
Despite the surprise, Milo says he was “happy with where they placed him, in relation to everyone else,” and that Jess’ purpose made him happy. Here he refers to the “new four episodes,” which is causing some to wonder if Jess in all four episodes, but I personally don’t read that into the quote. I think he’s simply referring to the story arc which goes over 4 episodes.
Despite the insistence that Scott Patterson has that he is nothing like Luke, Milo believes that “there’s a lot of Luke in Scott, and a lot of Scott in Luke,” and that they had a great time filming together again. I can’t wait to see their relationship evolve!
If you haven’t yet caught it, Milo’s new series This Is Us just premiered and it is amazing.
