Milo Ventimiglia on Being Surprised At Where Jess Is

Milo Ventimiglia, set to reprise his role as Jess in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, recently spoke with Collider about what it was like to return to Stars Hollow and become Jess again. Being friends with Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, and a bit supporter of Gilmore Girls, which he always credits as helping get his career going, Milo was among the first to know that a revival was in the works:

I got a phone call from Amy [Sherman-Palladino], I think it was sometime in October of last year, saying that they were gearing up to do it and how and why it was all happening. I’ve stayed close to Dan and Amy, over the years since I left the show, and I’ve always said to them that whenever they call me for anything they need, I’ll be there, which is funny ‘cause that’s the opening lyrics or the song. So, she called and said they were doing it, and I said, “Great! I don’t know where I’m going to be, but let me know and we’ll work it out. Of course, I’ll be there!”

In the interview, Milo says that who Jess became was “very much on the page,” so it was easy to get into the character and it made sense to him, although he did revisit the last three episodes Jess had appeared in, to “see where his head was at” and to understand the dynamics between the characters. And still, the revival brought surprises for where Jess is at:

I definitely went back and looked at the last three episodes that Jess was in, just to see where his head was at when he last left and to understand the dynamic between Rory and Luke and just his own journey in life. I was surprised about where he was, and then where he is when we pick back up with him.

Despite the surprise, Milo says he was “happy with where they placed him, in relation to everyone else,” and that Jess’ purpose made him happy. Here he refers to the “new four episodes,” which is causing some to wonder if Jess in all four episodes, but I personally don’t read that into the quote. I think he’s simply referring to the story arc which goes over 4 episodes.

Despite the insistence that Scott Patterson has that he is nothing like Luke,  Milo believes that “there’s a lot of Luke in Scott, and a lot of Scott in Luke,” and that they had a great time filming together again. I can’t wait to see their relationship evolve!

If you haven’t yet caught it, Milo’s new series This Is Us just premiered and it is amazing.

I believe that, along with Luke, Jess is one of the more compelling characters in the series. I think they are the ones that change and grow the most over the seven seasons, and I am very much looking forward to seeing where they are in their lives when Gg:AYITL drops. I am sorry that Liz and TJ will evidently not be a part of the revival. They added so much lively insight and fun into the Danes/Mariano stories, and the younger two Gilmore women’s lives. I was just as much invested in that family and their complex dynamics as those of the Gilmore clan.

Does that mean that he is down again?

It could mean he’s a parent.

I think there’s a chance that Jess have a child now. Maybe this is the surprise and maybe the misterious girl with a mom is Jess’s wife/girlfriend. Maybe this is why Jess is not Team Rory anymore.

He was surprised to see where Jess was and where he is now? Why do people think Milo wouldn’t think Jess would not be married and have a kid. That doesn’t seem surprising at all. Its been 9 years and he is not bad looking at all. I don’t think Milo was referring to Jess’ love life on his statements. Milo said he was surprised by who Jess was now. That seemed more on his career. I wonder what team the writer is on cuz its clear who ever writes these articles Does NOT care for Jess. If your Team Logan that’s pretty sad. I wouldn’t want to end up in that awful Huntzenburger family with an on the edge of alcoholic Logan who I can’t trust Not to cheat on me after we have a fight.
