It was recently announced that Sutton Foster would be making a guest appearance on the Gilmore Girls revival, Gilmore Girls: Seasons. Sutton was on set earlier this month filming her scenes, sharing at the time that she would have a “smaller part” featured in only “one” of the episodes, but now it looks like her character has expanded. As often happens when chemistry is right, the writers expand to add more content. It’s a fluid script.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sutton explains how great it was for her, a self-confessed fan of the series, to work on the show, and that her role now fills two episodes of Gilmore Girls, Spring and Fall (episode 2 and 4).
“The first time I walked on to the Gilmore Girls set – walked into Stars Hollow – was *crazy*. I was walking by and being like ‘There’s Lorelai’s house! There’s the Jeep! Oh my gosh, there’s Kim’s Antiques! Oh my gosh, there’s Luke’s Diner!’ You know, I’m a big super nerd. It’s really cool walking through.
“The first time I was there, it was decorated for Springtime and the second time I was there it was decorated for Fall, so all the pumpkins were out and all the Autumn leaves and it’s just a magical little place.”
Sutton shares that her character worked alongside Sally Struthers, Miss Patty, and Sophie (Carole King), and Taylor (Michael Winters) and some things she’s not allowed to talk about (“surprises” she calls them). Sutton also filmed a scene alongside Lauren Graham, which was emotional for her, from all the anticipation, fandom and admiration:
“Lauren Graham is awesome. She’s one of my favourite actresses… We got to film a scene together on the show. It was just surreal, I was really nervous. When it was over, when we got it, I just burst into tears.”
Sutton notes that Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino wrote a “very special part” for her and she walked away not wanting to change a thing. As a die-hard fan like us, that speaks volumes to the quality of the revival. We can’t wait!
