Coffee is a central theme in Gilmore Girls, but it’s not the only show to feature a love of coffee. While Lorelai and Rory may have had coffee at home and at Luke’s, Friends also spent an insane amount of time at Central Perk. When it comes down to sheer consumption of coffee, the question is, who drank more?
PayPal recently crunched the numbers and came up with the following:
Gilmore Girls had 153 episodes, drinking an average of 2 cups of coffee per episode, but one of those cups was usually brewed at home, the other at Luke’s (with free refills, so that could be many cups). Adding those costs together, and assuming that Lorelai even paid for her coffee at Luke’s, it comes to an annual coffee budget of $918 (somehow their math came to $765, but that isn’t correct if you assume a 50cent cup at home and $2.50 at Luke’s, per person). I also think the estimate is low on actual consumption, since Lorelai often drank many cups at home and then later at the Inn as well!
Friends stars also drank about 2 cups of coffee per episode, but there were 5 stars – not two – and both cups were usually from Central Perk, not from home, where coffee was priced higher than at Luke’s ($3.50 per cup). Based on that, over 236 episodes, the whole group spend $9,912 worth of coffee.
I share the same problem. Coffee Coffee COFFEE.
