Who Would You Cast in Stars Hollow?

Share

Which actors and actresses could you imagine asking for a top up at Luke’s, disrupting a town meeting or even taking a seat at Friday night dinner?

That's how Sue sees it

That there’s Jane Lynch, the Glee villain in a previous life as a hospital bureaucrat. If there’s one person who could stand up to Emily Gilmore, it would be Sue Sylvester – if she were able to stop griefing Luke about his butt-chin.

Lorelai: Well, what if I fill out this information and you can go find someone who can tell us how my dad is.
Nurse Sue: I’m not supposed to…
Lorelai: Or I could go and you can stay here and continue to discuss this with my mother.
Nurse Sue: I’ll go.

It’s taken for granted that nobody could ever replace Ed Herrmann as Richard Gilmore. They’d be foolhardy to even try. However, a recent discussion on the forums led me to thinking about the wider Gilmore family, nay the Stars Hollow universe – and who might the players be.

Regular New Girl watchers might recall this rather random Taylor Swift cameo, crashing a wedding and stealing the groom (in a good way).

she's so tall, she's actually sitting down.

Who could you imagine cameo-ing in Gilmore Girls?

I’m envisaging Anna Kendrick as a squirrel-crazy Gilmore cousin, staying over at Lorelai’s for leaf-peeping season and out-weirding Postman Kirk in her bunny slippers.

Who could you imagine joining the Gilmore family? Or walking the streets of Stars Hollow?

Rich

Rich originally began contributing to GIlmore News as 'Dairyman' in 2013, a reference to the character Dairyman Dick in Tess of the D'Urbervilles, (call me Rich). Here in the UK we were late to the Gilmore party and I don't remember what made me watch my first episode - the one where Lorelai picks Rory up from the police station after she and Logan steal a yacht - but I remember watching it again immediately. And then again. Thankfully, the next show was on the next day and I watched that one three times too. And then the boat one again. I couldn't believe the dialogue was so quick and so funny and I pretended to myself that I was only watching it so I could figure out who I was more keen on - the mom or the daughter. I swore that Aaron Sorkin must have been involved but I couldn't find his name attached anywhere, even on the internet. So I watched and loved and laughed and cried and the day after the series finale, they ran the entire show from the beginning again and Rory turned into a baby so then I was all about Lorelai. Lauren Graham is astonishing ("Mother: Breathtaking") and the show was - and is - lightning in a bottle. It's a treasure for those who watch and get swept up in it, like I did and like the readers of Gilmore News. It's heartbreak and chicken soup, family dysfunction and blind optimism, lighthearted romanticism and balls-out brilliant. Thanks to Arieanna and gilmorenews.com for letting me squat and allowing my inner Gilmore Geek out for air. I worry how it would otherwise manifest.

I’ve been watching “Our House”, a family drama that ran for two seasons in the mid 80s. The late Wilford Brimley was fabulous as the curmudgeonly patriarch. I could imagine him living on the opposite side of Lorelai as Babette/Morey. I think the two would develop a healthy respect for each other even though their methods could not be more different. Brimley would criticize Lorelai for being so…Lorelai but Rory would learn a lot from him. In fact he would probably be a good father figure for her and probably justify how she became so well-adjusted.

As an aside, I think that many GG fans would appreciate Our House as a primitive prototype. Basically, Brimley invites his widowed daughter-in-law and three kids to live with him after his son passes away. Those who don’t know the show would be shocked to know who plays the older daughter “Kris” who starts the show at age 15-going-on-16. In real time, Kris and Lorelai are just a couple of years apart. Watching this would give some insight to what life was like for a teenager in the 80’s for those who didn’t live it.

In general, though, I struggle with this question. The GG universe is already incredibly rich. Most people I can think of would be a distraction as opposed to being helpful to the show.

Sounds wonderful, Wonder Y. I don’t think it’ll be long before there’s an equivalent of The Wonder Years (looking back at the 60s) or Freaks and Geeks (likewise for the 80s) but for the 90s and noughties. Or has there already been something?

Like most, I was always pretty uniformally satisfied with the Gilmore cast. There were of course some secondary characters that were so generic that just about anybody could have played them like the SH Stepford moms; Andrew, the pastor, and the rabbi; the ladies from the Chilton booster club and some of the DAR regulars and Richard’s buisness associates. However,to add a bit of fun I can think of a few “blast-from-the-past” nods that might have been in order like Jerry Auerbach [Dirty Dancing] as the lawyer interested in Emily, Lindsey Wagoner [The Paper Chase] as a true knockout Pennilon Lott interested in Richard, and either Pat Morita, Tom Bosley, or Al Molinaro [Happy Days] as Trix presepective paramour..

I always thought Amy Sedaris would have been a nice addition as a star’s hollow wacko (limited dose) — bursting into Luke’s and carrying on about something (aliens, russian spys), until he threw her out.

Well, this is certainly food for thought. How about Mary Louis Parker as a Gilmore relative! Fast talking battle of the wits between her and Lorelia. She could have made appearances at Trix’s wake … or renewal of vows! They look a lot alike! Or MLP as a friend of Crazy Carrie … competing for Luke! I liked her in the early episodes of Weeds. Used to think she could have played Lorelai, but know better by now!

She added, And I think that if it ever came around, we would all jump in and do it. And if it ever happens, I promise you we’ll do it correctly. Where would the residents of Stars Hollow be now?

Not a SH casting by any means, but this summer’s award for best comedy cameo on TV by an ex-Gilmore goes to [drum roll please] Kelly Bishop. She showed up on Sex/Drugs/Rock&Roll as Dennis Leary’s mom and Liz Gilles grandmom.

Basic show premise is Leary’s just missed 90’s rock band meets his daughter who he did not know existed but is a better musician than him and looking to reach the big time. In this episode we meet the older generation [Kelly and Peter Riegert] and find out that she was a “missed it by that much” actress who was aced out [in her mind at least] by Julie Andrews for the role of Mary Poppins and never lets anyone forget it. Her character is a melding of Emily at her most imperious, Fanny at her craziest ascerbic best, toss in a fair dose of Paris at her shrillest with a little touch of Louise snarkiness and you are almost there. The final ingredient is Lorelai’s sailor on leave saltiness and you have a howlling good time not for the faint of heart. Enjoy!!

Anne Hathaway would be great as Rory’s cousin… Tom Selleck could, not replace Ed Herrmann but could act as an uncle coming from the West…. He would have horses and would teach Rory’s children, and Lorelai’s children to rid… Taylor Swift would be related to Miss Patty as a successful talented country music singer :)
