Sean Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel’s big summer movie this year is Guardians of the Galaxy. The trailer features a number of misfit heroes, one of whom is a spunky CGI raccoon velvetly voiced by Bradley Cooper. However, Rocket Raccoon’s acting performance is given by director James Gunn’s brother: one Sean Gunn (Kirk from Gilmore Girls).

ain't easy being green

This on-set photo of the two brothers gives an idea of how Kirk might look on a regular Stars Hollow summer’s day, pretending he’s invisible.

Sean Gunn also dons the green bodysuit to play Thanos, who was the Big Bad Unspeaking Dude at the end of 2012’s The Avengers movie credits. And as if that weren’t enough, Sean also plays Kraglin, one of the Ravagers – seen here looking pretty damn magnificent.  This is how Kirk sees himself in the mirror.

What do you think it says on the black t-shirt he’s wearing underneath?

Guardians of the Galaxy is an off-the-wall space comedy and appears to be a significant departure by Marvel from its recent popular superhero schtick. If the box office responds well, hopes are that this will create a new franchise and initial screening audiences have been particularly positive about the raccoon.

What do you think? Is this kind of thing up your street?

Personally, I’m enjoying this current generation of superhero movies, a far cry from say, Ben Affleck’s Daredevil. I generally disdain the Hollywood money-making machine putting out sequel after remake after sequel (didn’t we just re-do Spiderman?!) so I’m all for seeing something a little new and untested like this. It’s a shame Marvel seem to have taken two steps backward with Ant-Man, which could have really been something different with Edgar Wright.

How about Gilmore Girls as superheroes?  2000’s Lauren Graham could have given 1970s Lynda Carter a run for her money as Wonder Woman.  I can see Taylor Doose as a cantankerous old Bruce Wayne from the classic Dark Knight Returns comic – he becomes this old chunky, moody guy.  Scott Patterson (Luke) could have been an inspired choice as Joker, once he’d gotten over that whole issue of having sausages pulled out of him.  Any superhero casting ideas?

Rich

Rich originally began contributing to GIlmore News as 'Dairyman' in 2013, a reference to the character Dairyman Dick in Tess of the D'Urbervilles, (call me Rich). Here in the UK we were late to the Gilmore party and I don't remember what made me watch my first episode - the one where Lorelai picks Rory up from the police station after she and Logan steal a yacht - but I remember watching it again immediately. And then again. Thankfully, the next show was on the next day and I watched that one three times too. And then the boat one again. I couldn't believe the dialogue was so quick and so funny and I pretended to myself that I was only watching it so I could figure out who I was more keen on - the mom or the daughter. I swore that Aaron Sorkin must have been involved but I couldn't find his name attached anywhere, even on the internet. So I watched and loved and laughed and cried and the day after the series finale, they ran the entire show from the beginning again and Rory turned into a baby so then I was all about Lorelai. Lauren Graham is astonishing ("Mother: Breathtaking") and the show was - and is - lightning in a bottle. It's a treasure for those who watch and get swept up in it, like I did and like the readers of Gilmore News. It's heartbreak and chicken soup, family dysfunction and blind optimism, lighthearted romanticism and balls-out brilliant. Thanks to Arieanna and gilmorenews.com for letting me squat and allowing my inner Gilmore Geek out for air. I worry how it would otherwise manifest.

The Gunn brothers in a big-ticket movie production. Who would have predicted that a few years ago??

As to other casting possibilities, how about:

Jess, Paris, and Louise as Batman, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy.
Dean and Rory as Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl.
Mitchem, Taylor, and Kirk as the Bizzaro Three Stooges.

And rounding out the casting for Batman we have: The stone cold principal as Mr. Freeze, Jimmy as the Riddler, Logan as the Joker, Jackson as the Penguin, Richard as Comissioner Gordon, Luke as Alfred, Brian as Robin, and Rory as Batgirl.

The incredible’s family would also include: Lane and Tristan as the tween siblings, and Kirk as fire-breathing Jack-Jack.

Oh yea, and have seen a few ads for the new movie. Rocket’s body language is just like Kirk!!
