Gilmore Girls in the Movies

Share

When was the last time your started lollygagging at the TV, pointing and gibbering at the screen because one of the Gilmore Girls alumni turned up where they shouldn’t? What, just me? Come on, ‘fess up.

lorelai and arlen

Sean Gunn (GG’s Kirk) turning up in Glee was a nice surprise, although he was criminally underused. And I always have a moment of re-acclimatisation seeing Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) as the mother in Dirty Dancing. Uh, not that I watch Dirty Dancing over and over or anything.

They’ve had a fair run at the movies too, stand-outs being Milo Ventimiglia (Jess) in Rocky Balboa and Melissa McCarthy (Sookie) in Bridesmaids. Keiko Agena (Lane) recently won Best Supporting Actress for the short Lil Tokyo Reporter at the AoF Awards.

Prior to her blossoming career in publishing, Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore) had a few good features under her belt. She was a Lorelai-a-like in the charming comedy The Answer Man (aka Arlen Faber), had a small part in the great Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, was underwritten in Evan Almighty and successfully played against type in Bad Santa.

Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) carried on her Rory story in Post Grad, vacationed with her buddies in the enjoyable Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and made the most of her baby blues in Sin City.

What’s your favourite non-Gilmore role from a Gilmore Girls actor? Extra points for anything really obscure.

Rich

Rich originally began contributing to GIlmore News as 'Dairyman' in 2013, a reference to the character Dairyman Dick in Tess of the D'Urbervilles, (call me Rich). Here in the UK we were late to the Gilmore party and I don't remember what made me watch my first episode - the one where Lorelai picks Rory up from the police station after she and Logan steal a yacht - but I remember watching it again immediately. And then again. Thankfully, the next show was on the next day and I watched that one three times too. And then the boat one again. I couldn't believe the dialogue was so quick and so funny and I pretended to myself that I was only watching it so I could figure out who I was more keen on - the mom or the daughter. I swore that Aaron Sorkin must have been involved but I couldn't find his name attached anywhere, even on the internet. So I watched and loved and laughed and cried and the day after the series finale, they ran the entire show from the beginning again and Rory turned into a baby so then I was all about Lorelai. Lauren Graham is astonishing ("Mother: Breathtaking") and the show was - and is - lightning in a bottle. It's a treasure for those who watch and get swept up in it, like I did and like the readers of Gilmore News. It's heartbreak and chicken soup, family dysfunction and blind optimism, lighthearted romanticism and balls-out brilliant. Thanks to Arieanna and gilmorenews.com for letting me squat and allowing my inner Gilmore Geek out for air. I worry how it would otherwise manifest.

Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids! Hands down one of the funniest role one of the Gilmore actors have had.

Where to start? Edward Herrmann as the head vampire in The Lost Boys, Dakin Matthews on Charmed and King of Queens, and Honor Huntzberger’s hyper, “I look like a drag queen” bridesmaid Megan as one of Don Draper’s many love interests on Mad Men. And I had to hold back the squee-ing when I saw Henry Cho all grown up on the 4/29/2013 episode of 2 Broke Girls.

Here’s one that’s pretty obscure. Shelly Cole in The Village Barbershop. She’s amazing!

Another “oldie but goodie” was Teal Redmond in the 2005 or so Disney Channel movie “Double Teamed”, a story about a pair of tall twin girls journey from high-school basketball players to the start of the WNBA. Teal played their snarky point-guard who was upstaged and ticked off when they first appeared on the scene but eventually came around to embrace the team. Since she was surrounded by taller people and in black hair, I didn’t actually recognize her until they rolled the credits even though the voice recognition was driving me crazy. Just shows what happens when you see actors outside the expected perspective we have of them. She was really good!!

The dude who played Roone also periodically shows up in “Justified” as a gangsters son. Completely out of charcter from what we would have expected from GG.

I just recently watched the entire series of Friday Night Lights…my favorite couple of episodes happened to have Matt Czuchry in them. I’m not sure if the favoritism was because of the storyline or the use of Matt is a completely opposite role than Logan Huntzberger.

Logan’s in Friday Night Lights? Cool. He’s been OK in The Good Wife too, but I haven’t watched the current series.

Teal Redmond, snarky? Type-cast much? I enjoyed James Van Der Beek playing himself in Don’t Trust the B*, opposite Krysten Ritter too. I’d like to see more of Teal!
