Melissa McCarthy (Sookie on Gilmore Girls)sat down with Parade to talk about her hit comedy, Mike and Molly, and what it’s like to be a mom of two little girls. We also learn a lot of new things about Melissa – such as her dream to be a clothing designer!
Melissa grew up dreaming of being a clothing designer in New York. She was lead cheerleader at one point, goth at another. And full-on goth too, with a cape! “I thought it was hilarious. People didn’t know what to do with me.” You’ll be glad to know, Melissa is working on a clothing line!!
“I’m working on a plus-size line. I’m at a size where it’s hard to find something that doesn’t make me look like Ann B. Davis [Alice on The Brady Bunch]. God bless her. I love that woman, but I don’t want to dress like her.”
But, acting found her first, with comedy. After moving to New York with no money, her best friend told her to do stand-up comedy:
“I had no idea what I was doing—I had never even been to a club. He dressed me in a gold swing coat, and I had a huge red wig and giant shoes. I was like a short drag queen! And I went up there and just told stories about being tall, pretty, and wealthy in Manhattan.”
Melissa talks about Mike & Molly, about the workload of being a lead (bonus: billboards!), and how, in real-life at home, she’s more like Mike: “I don’t relate to it because I’m always the one screwing up in my relationship and my husband’s this calm, smart, funny guy.”
Speaking of funny, Melissa shares a funny aspect of being a mom (and one I can relate to as well!): “I haven’t used the bathroom alone in three years. Ever. There’s always a knock on the door.”
