Parenthood 1.07 “What’s Goin’ On Down There”
Air Date: April 13, 2010
Discussion & Full Video [Spoilers, Photos, Video Trailer]

In this episode, Sarah must decide between her own happiness and that of her daughter Amber. See, both of them like Amber’s teacher, Mark Cyr. It’s really rather a sad scenario, because Sarah is obviously head over heels for Mark – and him for her. Sure, he’s 12 years younger… but does it matter? Well, they decide it doesn’t. However, when Adam sees that Amber has a crush on Mr. Cyr, Sarah decides to be a good mom and break it off. Was this a good idea? Was it too late?

Here are more thoughts from the episode:

  • I thought that Crosby was definitely using Jabbar, which I didn’t like, but I was proud of him for his ‘growing up’ moment
  • Adam’s breakdown was very realistic. He definitely had a lot on his plate and I would have been frustrated too! And who knew he could surf!!
  • Will Julia go forward with pro bono work, do you think?
  • What does it say about Julia that she enjoys crushing small companies?
  • I thought Haddie was really sweet to share that bike ride with Adam
  • I was so sad for Amber. And also really disappointed. Was she just trying to do well to impress Mr. Cyr, or was she simply that crushed?
  • The last scene with Amber – is she doing that to make her mom mad?

Another great Parenthood, don’t you think?

One of my least favorite episodes.

Sarah-Amber-teacher love triangle……a bit obvious resolution and everybody loses. While that was the most likely outcome, it really throws a wet blanket on the plotline and what we will see moving forward. Since Amber just lost her only positive motivation to acclimate to new surroundings, of course she will backslide and do so because she is hurt and mad, not just to make her mom uncomfortable. Hard to believe Sara was that blind to what was going on with Amber.

Crosy-Jabbar motivational yo-yoing continues…..boring. The Braverman’s would be better off with only 3 kids.

Adams freak-out…. first time in the series that Peter Krause seemed out of his element, surprisingly bad scenes. The later scene with Hadie was nice and in proper perspective. To continue rehumanizing Adam they should have show him actually catching a wave. No doubt he could handle it.

Since all of the siblings are uber-competitive, it is hardly surprising that Julia plays to win in court as she even takes perverse pleasure in truly crushing her foes [shades of Paris]. Since she had to work incredibly hard to get where she is, to simply walk away and do more than token pro-bono work seems unlikely. Plus she likes the prestige and money get gets as part of her job and this additionally gives her one-ups-manship on her siblings.
