“Parenthood” 1.05 ‘The Situation’ Discussion

Parenthood 1.05 “The Situation”
Air Date: March 30, 2010
Discussion & Full Video [Spoilers, Video Trailer]

In this episode, Adam finds himself a “dad” to Drew, which initially makes Sarah (Lauren Graham) extremely happy. Drew has always been let down by his father, so it was great to see him find someone to care about – and a bonus that Max seemed to really enjoy the time too! However, when Adam has to make a choice between Max and Drew, Drew lost out. I’m not really sure why, when it came down to that, he didn’t just bring Drew too. Anyway…

Sarah makes a new friend in Mr. Cyr, Amber’s English teacher. Remind you of Max Medina? Yeah, I know! Anyway, I like Mr. Cyr more, right off, than Max. He seems more of a rebel, you know? Anyway, I thought he was a great character to have in Sarah’s life! And Sarah! Well, she had a decision to make, didn’t she? Were you surprised that she wasn’t honest, right away?

Other thoughts: I thought it very fitting that Julia had issues with Sydney not wanting to be a princess. But I’m still not a big Julia fan. I was really proud that Crosby told his girlfriend about Jabar – but I was really disappointed with her reaction. Although I agree he shouldn’t have hidden the news, I would have expected her to be proud of him for stepping up as a parent – that is, after all, what she wants.

What did you think of this episode?

Seems like the Adam/Max/Drew/Sarah dynamic is always going to be filled with lollipops and landmines. Drew gets a surrogate father [at times], Max a friend he can look up to and have fun with in Drew, Adam an additional avenue to get Max’s positive attention when Drew is present [as well as envisioning the fully healty son he wished he had ????], and Sarah a father sub in Adam to help get Drew engaged in the new community. Of course all bets are compromised when Max go off and Adam has to address the situation in real time and loses track of or even forgets all other commitments he might have made [Hattie understands this, maybe Drew and Sarah will come to this understanding in time]. Not fair, but sometimes that’s how it is.

The Sarah/Amber/Teacher triangle looks like the polar opposite of what we saw in GG [thankfully original]. Apparently Sarah ‘s paper was much better appreciated by Mr. Cyr than by her original English teacher who probably marked her down. So it was easy for Sarah to hold back on revealing Amber’s transgression when she thought this might get Amber [as well as herself] some more positive feedback. Glad Amber fessed up and got the right story in place. In contrast to GG, it looks like Sarah and Amber will get into a little rivalry over who like-likes teacher the best. End result might be the same [mother and daughter not talking] but at least the journey will be different.

Julia/Sidney and Crosby/Jabbar storylines seem to slowly but surely be filling in, but at present I like Julia and Crosby better when they are interacting with their siblings and elders than their kids. Overall a good episode.

  2. I really like how Drew could show things to Max that were hard to learn when his dad was teaching him. I think it’s good for both Adam and Max to spend time with Drew as it helps them bond better, and Drew definitely needs the male attention. He grew up with his sister and mom, so playing baseball with these two is something he has probably missed growing up.

I thought the teacher storyline for Sarah was good. I’m glad Amber decided to fess up to the teacher though she could have let her mom in on it.

I loved when Adam looked for the baseball between Haddie and her boyfriend Steve to separate them. He was so happy thinking the boy was out of his daughter’s life after their fight, but that didn’t last very long. He’ll eventually realize that in her boy-crazy years, even if this guy disappears, another guy will be around the corner. Still, it’s hard to see teenagers, who you still view as children, making out.

I’m glad Crosby fessed up to his girlfriend, but I’m also glad Jabar’s mom has agreed to the DNA test. Yes, he probably is the father. But these days, after 5 years especially, you can’t expect him to take someone’s word for it when custody and child support could be issues.

I love the interaction of the main siblings especially Adam and Sarah, they are kind of goofy with each other.
