EWs Ken Tucker has put together a list of “Favorite Sitcom Births” including on that list a special Gilmore Girls moment. Now, there were many births featured on Gilmore Girls – Lorelai, Sookie, Lane, Liz, Sherry – but only one listed here as a favorite… Sookie!!
Here’s why this birth was picked:
“One of my favorite TV pregnancies occurred on Gilmore Girls: Lorelai’s pal Sookie, impatient for her wee one to arrive. Here’s Sookie panicking that the baby “won’t come out,” moaning that she feels like “the fat guy in Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life — I’m going to explode,” and complaining that what she really wants is “a Manhattan and a Scotch and a beer and a sidecar.” In short, classic Gilmore:”
Was this your favorite birth moment on Gilmore Girls too? If not, which was, and why?
Thanks Sylvia!

I do love this moment because there is the reference to the Dear Emily & Richard moment with 99 Luftballoons and because it’s kinda both a Lorelai/Rory baby birth moment and Sookie is both hilarious yet also in need of real comforting here and it’s sweet that Lorelai is able to calm her down. I really love the whole episode “Dear Emily & Richard” better though… both Sherry’s birth and Lorelai’s flashbacks were SO memorable, and Rory’s reactions to the whole thing were so funny yet realistic, but Lorelai’s emotion throughout as she thought about her own birth and Christopher and all that stuff was just so so well acted by Lauren Graham and such good writing and so sad and insanely memorable. It’s one of the most important backstory episodes of the series, referenced here, referenced when Chris is asking Lorelai to elope with him in season 7, referenced in the deleted scenes in the season 3 finale, etc.
