Has Jess Given Up on Rory?

Share

gilmore-girls-oasis-2.jpgIn ‘Eight O’Clock at the Oasis‘, when the sprinkler gets stuck at Dwight’s house, Jess comes to Rory’s rescue to help turn it off. Rory found him when Dean didn’t return her page and she was running into town looking for help.

Both dripping with water, Jess asks Rory how she’s doing. It’s a sweet moment, but one broken when Dean returns Rory’s page to say he’s coming over to help her. In a moment of chivalry – or defeat? – Jess turns back on the sprinkler so that Dean can save the day.

Why does Jess do this for Dean – or Rory? Has he given up completely?

i don’t think that jess gave up on rory but instead felt that being rory’s friend was better than fighting with her about what happened during the summer. since his jealously technique with dating shane didn’t work since she was still with dean he thought he might try a different way.

Absolutely not! If anything, this scene is a reaffirmation of the feelings on both sides. Though he may complain to Luke that the girls he likes “don’t give a damn,” in this interaction with Rory it’s clear that interest is still very present. Jess drives it – he follows Rory, fixes the sprinklers without being asked, and encourages the conversation with questions about her life, school, etc. Their chemistry is electric in this scene – they can’t stop looking at each other! At this stage I’d say they both have a pretty good idea of how the other feels, and this is undeniably a Cute Moment – they’re all wet and tense and liking each other. When Jess turns the sprinklers back on, he’s showing Rory that he gets what she wants. He’s following her rules. But his presence and his behavior broadcast a totally different message, and she definitely picks up on it. We have to wonder where the conversation would have gone if Dean hadn’t paged her back. It was so intense between them, Rory probably would have thrown herself at him again! The point is, there’s something *there*. If we ever doubt what this scene is meant to imply, just listen to the background guitar. . . this is supposed to be Adorable.

    Jess is so smart.
He knows he has made some way towards them being together.

If he had stayed or even left without turning the water back on, Dean would know and made it difficult for Rory. In turn that would cancel out any progress made.

Jess did not do it for Dean. He only did it for Rory. The rivalry between the two boys is terrible.

I think what jess did was just another way of fighting for rory. I don’t think he had given up on rory i think he just stepped up on a whole new level.
if that makes any sense. :)
