In ‘P.S. I Lo…‘, Luke is still dating Rachel, and is clueless about birthday shopping. When Lorelai spots the meowing potholders he’d bought her, she offers to buy him some other options. After picking out a gift for Rachel, Lorelai decides to pick up some new clothes for Luke! Why??

Is Lorelai wanting to be more involved in Luke’s life? Does she think he needs a make-over? Does that mean she doesn’t like him the way he is? Or is she trying to see him in a different way?
As Lorelai explains, it’s not to “make a new Luke”, but to “see another side of the old Luke,” as if by getting him to try on a suit, she’s trying on a new way of seeing him. And if she is, that’s rather confusing, given that she’s just getting back together with Max!
And then Rachel spots Lorelai helping Luke with his belt and is just stunned – what is it she sees when looking at Luke & Lorelai together like this? How does it change Rachel’s perception of Luke – and Lorelai’s influence on Luke’s life?

At first thought Lorelai is putting Luke in new clothes SHE bought to claim him as hers, just like a dog marks his territory. We can assume that subconsciously she knew what she wanted all along, but just didn’t have the guts to follow through.
Second, Luke is her friend and she wanted him to look good on an eventual birthday date with Nicole. Which might have looked confusing to outsiders, but to her was just serving the duty as friend.
Everyone will view it as they prefer, that’s for sure.
Honestly, I think this was just classic Lorelai basically making Luke play dress up for her. She a) loves to do things like this to most people (remember Kirk in Season 4 with his date with Lulu) and b) loves to drive Luke a little crazy. I think what was so odd about the situation to Rachel was that Luke LET her do these things to/for him while he would usually never let someone dress him up just for fun.
Lorelai loves to shop. Even better with Luke’s credit card.
Lorelai loves clothes, loves to shop for clothes with other peoples money.
Lorelai loves to play with Luke and make him uneasy, better yet with his money.
Lorelai
That’s a question. And if nobody has the right answer, that means they have never danced. And staying to a more conventional answer we can say: Women love to do that. As a more traditional answer: Women love to change the man they love.
Clothes mean so much in almost any human culture. They mean statue, they show what people social class is… They aim to hid, or to un-hide-what-appears-only-to-be-hidden-by-nothing-more-than-explicit-intent-to-be-seen, and so one.
I think she has always found Luke attractive, and when she saw those clothes she thought about how good he’d look in them. So, she got them. She might not have ‘known’ that is why, but it’s what makes sense to me.
