In ‘The Third Lorelai‘, it’s clear that there is quite a bit of tension between Emily & her mother-in-law, Trix (the first Lorelai). At this point, we have no idea why that could be. We simply know that Trix enjoys sending Emily on useless errands and gives gifts that Emily hates.

Meanwhile, Trix praises Lorelai for being self-sufficient and witty. It’s almost like praising Lorelai is a dig against Emily. Do you think this is true? What is it about Emily that Trix doesn’t like?
And, do you think Trix offered money to Lorelai for Rory’s education as something generous, or to spite Emily? And when Lorelai becomes confused about how money would alter her relationship with Rory, Trix reneges her offer and blames Emily for Lorelai’s immaturity. Crazy!

I always got the sense that Trix thought Emily wasn’t good enough for Richard and that he should have married Pendleton Lott instead. I vaguely remember something to that effect when Emily and Lorelei find one of Trix’s letters when they’re going through her stuff after she dies.
Oh, for sure. But in Season 1, we don’t know that yet. ;)
Not good enough for Richard? How about Emily not being good enough to do Trix’s laundry! Any time there was a point of leverage, Trix took advantage of it and made her day by taking a dig at Emily. I suspect Trix made that judgement in the first 30 seconds she met Emily and never gave it a second thought.
I think the lifetime of Emily always be made to feel somewhat inferior to Richard’s family without knowing how to blow it off explains a great deal of why she is constantly on edge, never can relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life, and always has to be right.
Great pic, do not remember that being in the episode.
I think Emily has been a great daughter-in-law. When Trix died, she made tons of arrangements/phone calls in order to have the funeral exact the way Trix wanted. Well, of course, until she and Lorelai found Trix’s letter to Richard before their wedding day. Emily could have ignore Trix’s will and do the funeral her way, but she didn’t. She respected Trix’s will. This is very big of her as she usually is a control freak.
It was my impression that Trix didn’t think Emily was good enough for Richard. She made it clear that she appreciates women who are self-sufficient. Emily stated that she went from her parent’s house, to college, to living with Richard. She never had to make a dime in her life or work to support herself.
I think the writers of the show created tension between Emily and Trix just for the sake of comedy! It’s pretty funny, when you first meet Emily you would assume she doesn’t let anyone push her around. Then you meet Trix, this little old lady, and you see her drive Emily crazy! Adds comedy to an already funny show!
When talking about the trust fund Trix offers Rory in this episode it makes me wonder something else… Why didn’t Trix ever offer a trust fund to Lorelai? Because she had a baby at an unsuitable age? Because she didn’t go to an Ivy League college? It seems very odd, especially because it would have driven Emily absolutely crazy! Emily would have been furious with Trix for offering Lorelai money after she left her parent’s home to go live her life somewhere else.
I think it’s a classic case of a mother thinking that no one will ever be good enough for her son and she resents emily for marrying richard.
Also Arieanna, I saw a 60 seconds video with alexis and one with zach with them talking about post grad and whatnot. Theres not much to it but I thought I’d let you know.
I have always been disappointed with Richard in episodes with his mother. He always acted like he didn’t notice the treatment his wife was getting from his mother. He was smarter than that.
