What Does Luke See in Rachel?

In ‘Star-Crossed Lovers and Other Strangers,’ we get to meet Luke’s Rachel! The Rachel! Rachel was Luke’s “very serious ex-girlfriend” who broke his heart. Sookie had shared before that Rachel was an adventurous woman and that Stars Hollow was simply too small for her. Though the town thought Luke & Rachel would get married, it didn’t work out. Except now she’s back – coming to see Luke on impulse. Luke loses himself completely.

So, what is it about Rachel that appeals to Luke? From what I can tell, she’s his complete opposite. She’s spontaneous and adventurous, flitting from place to place. She’s personable and open, though she doesn’t seem conscious that her nature seems to upset Luke. Rachel seems to want Luke to admire and miss her, to love her, despite everything. And maybe he does? He tells Rachel he’s not sure what there is to Lorelai yet, but that he did miss Rachel. And tells Lorelai later that he may “jump in” and give his relationship with Rachel another try, even if she will probably leave him again.

Why would Luke be attracted to someone who probably will end up hurting him? Is it perhaps just knowing that she returns his feelings – in some way – that makes Rachel appealing to Luke?

Actually Luke tends to fall for girls who are his exact opposite. At the same time it must be hard to find someone like him! :-)

Rachel, Nicole (“aand Lorelai were all very different to him

Sorry, I posted while I had not finished…

So as I was saying, Rachel, Nicole (“a suit” as he first calls her) and Lorelai were all very different to him. I a way, I think Rachel and Lorelai are quite similar. That’s probably why they got along so well.

So, maybe because he couldn’t “get” Lorelai, he turned to Rachel and let her in again, in spite of all the risks. At that time, Lorelai is completely oblivious to his feelings while Rachel is pretty clear she’s here for good. Until she’s smart enough to notice, Luke is not officialy taken but still he kind of his…

I can’t really see what attracted luke to rachel apart from, maybe, her appearance because there are completely opposite to the extent where you wonder how they even came together. I agree that he does seem to go for the “opposites” but even though lorelai was very different from him, there was something that made it work, probably they fact that they were extremely close before hand and lorelai’s exuberent personality that made it hard for people not to like. Anyway thats off topic now. I can’t comprehend the relationship between luke and rachel.

I think Rachel is to Luke what Chris is to Lorelai. They were both relationships from a long time ago and Luke dropped everything when Rachel came back into his life just as Lorelai seemed to drop everything when Chris would come back into her life. Both Rachel and Chris would stop by unannounced… There are a few similarities between the two characters.

As for what attracts Luke to Rachel, I’m not really sure. Maybe they had more in common when they were younger and just grew apart. I think Lorelai is a much better fit for Luke than Rachel!

Think the real question is what does Rachel see in Luke? Suspect the same things that Lorelai sees, caring for people in a meaningful if curmudgonly way, enough conversation skills beyond an occasional grunt to remain an interesting challenge, and oh yes, that physical presence. Faced with this surprising return and continuing attraction to him, Luke is smart enough to reciprocate Rachel’s attention. Nothing better to do until Lorelai comes around and hey Rachel is just going to eventually leave again anyway, right??

  7. Sara Bonds says:

I actually never could figure out what Luke saw in Rachel. They seemed so different. She didn’t seem flirty or sexy enough for Luke, in my opinion.
