In ‘Double Date‘, Lorelai gets a lot of action… so to speak. Given that this whole episode is about dating, for all the characters, it’s not surprising that we see Lorelai in several stages of dating.
There is Lorelai dating Max, though technically they’re now “on a break”.
There is Lorelai going on that horrid double date with Rune (but, oh so funny!)
There is Luke sort-of asking Lorelai out on a date, saying “Maybe we could do it again sometime,” in reference to playing poker again
In here, we have three beginnings for Lorelai, but each of them completely different in experience. With Max, Lorelai knew right away that she liked him. With Rune, it was obvious distaste. And with Luke, it seems like there’s a level of uncertainty. It’s not the in-your-face-overwhelming-crazy-attraction, like with Max. And maybe Lorelai needs that kind of balance.
Which kind of dating is more meaningful, for Lorelai? The one that she’s instantly and dramatically drawn to, or the one that sort of surprises her (Luke)?

I think the one where she is surprised is more meaningful, because it catches her off guard, although it has been in the making for many years. It’s more special, because she has been subconciously wishing it to happen.
I’d agree with Beth but I’m not sure Lorelai would since she paid so much attention to Max for so long. If you think about it, these three types of connections (or at least the instant connection and the initial hesitance connection) show up a lot in this series and for the most part it seems like the long-time-coming relationships are characterized as more significant. For instance, Lane’s relationship with Zach was more significant then her relationship with Dave, Rory’s relationship with Jess (and, fine, Logan) was more significant than her’s with Dean, and Lorelai’s relationship with Luke is more significant than her instant attraction to Max but also Christopher as well. This show is basically built on these types of relationships actually if you think about it.
Ryan, I totally agree with you.
Both girls are usually drawn to guys who are not meant to last.
As for the question above, I also think that the one that surprises Lorelai, ie Luke, is more meaningful. However, I don’t think she really sees their moment as a date.
It was not intented to be and didn’t really turn out to be along those lines. It was more like two very good friends sharing a sweet moment.
But, I think for the first time Lorelai considers the idea of Luke as something more than just a friend.
But Luke misses the opportunity the next day by getting cold feet and not officially asking her out.
That’s also the beauty of their relationship. They were not always in sync. Well, their feelings have always been but they just had trouble expressing them.
