Why Does Lorelai Invite Dean Over?

In ‘Kiss and Tell‘, Rory gets her first kiss from Dean, and says ‘Thank You’, which she finds thoroughly embarrassing. And she doesn’t want Lorelai to be mad at her. So, when Rory sees that Lorelai is having a bad day, she keeps her perfect kiss to herself. Which, of course, hurts Lorelai… who finds out about the kiss from Mrs. Kim.

Lorelai is beyond hurt that Rory won’t tell her about the kiss, even when she tries to get Rory to talk about it by hinting. She thinks Dean is like Christopher, and I’m not sure if that is a good or a bad thing to her. Later, after Lorelai ambushes her about the kiss and tries to say it’s a good thing, Lorelai invites Dean to their movie night. Spur of the moment.

Why do you think this is? Is Lorelai trying too hard to be accepting? Or is she being overprotective? In a way, it reminds me of Emily, and how she always wants to be involved in Lorelai’s love life. At the same time, I almost think that Lorelai forgets she’s not just Rory’s best friend, but also her mother. And, after being ‘left out’ of the kiss, it’s like Lorelai doesn’t want to be left out of the dating.

  1. Taylor says:

Lorelai invites Dean over because she knows that Rory is way to chicken to do it herself. She’s taking it upon herself to be involoved :)

  2. Mac says:

I think she wanted to get to know Dean to make sure Rory was safe with him. I love the talk she has with him while Rory “is washing her hands” :

“She won’t get on your motorcycle
    I don’t have a motorcycle
She won’t get on your motorcyle!
    Okay.”

Another great moment is when Rory says out loud that her mom is not wearing any underwear and then Luke advises Lorelai not to sit on any cold benches! :-)

  3. cs says:

In response to Mac, Rory is “washing her face from all the sugar she ate”

but anyhow, im pretty sure that Lorelai invites Dean over for one, or maybe all, of three reasons:
    1. This is Rory’s first boyfriend, and Lorelai wants to make sure Dean is good enough for Rory
    2. Lorelai knows that Rory is probably too timid to invite Dean over, but also she wants to prove to Rory that SHE IS OKAY WITH A GUY THING.
    3. Lorelai wants to talk to Dean, proposing to him that Lorelai is the HBIC and that he better not mess with that because Lorelai does not want to lose her bestfriend to some 16 year old punk.

  4. Sara Bonds says:

I think Lorelai invited Dean because, in the early seasons especially, she tried TOO hard to be a cool mom.

The episode gives all the answers to these questions, this isn’t Lost, this isn’t Fringe. It’s Gilmore Girls and Lorelai was obviously torn between excitement (she’s checking Dean out with Rory before going up to the register to pay, and Lorelai is raving about Dean having great eyes, and later on she’s pleasantly surprised when he mentions to the cashier that Gene Wilder is the star of Willy Wonka, not Gene Hackman) but also sadness that Rory was growing up.

By inviting Dean, she’s giving Rory a chance to get to know Dean better, as well as give herself a chance to meet him, since like she obviously knew from the Pilot when Rory wanted to stay in Stars Hollow High to be close to Dean, Rory really does like him. She was really happy and upbeat when she invited Dean, she wasn’t being sneaky or dreadful.

When Rory freaks out Lorelai tells she just wanted to a friend (I believe Rory responds, “you’re not Lane” )and inviting Dean over to they could all catch a movie together; Rory is upset because “boy and girls usually date alone” and Lorelai is really sad that she made Rory so anxious about seeing Dean with such short notice.

Was Lorelai trying too hard? Yes, because she’s Rory’s mother. But when she goes in the kitchen for popcorn and goes back to the living room, she sees Dean and Rory sharing a nice moment and she goes back into the kitchen with a tiny smile on her lips, because clearly, she wanted Rory to be happy and Rory was laughing and having a good time after the initial shyness.

I get not everyone likes Dean. But this is reaching when the episode clearly points out how in love Rory is with Dean, and how Lorelai just wants to be included in this new aspect of Rory’s life so she can both be a friend when Rory needs her, and also be a mom and set the record straight.

Dean understands this very well she he tells Lorelai that if Lorelai doesn’t like him, he would not have a chance in hell with Rory. So Dean is also aware and respectful of the absolutely importance of family and Rory’s love and bond with her mother because the key of everything, even a relationship with him.
