Earlier this season, Rory shared with her grandfather that she dreamed of visiting Fez. It was just one of the places that she dreamed of going to, but it was given special attention in their conversation. And it was something Richard gloated about to his friends at the club, saying “She’s going to Fez someday,” being proud of Rory’s desire for travel.
So, in this episode, ‘Rory’s Birthday Parties,’ when Richard hands Rory a little envelope for her birthday, he says it’s for her trip to Fez. And this happens a second time, with a second check, with Richard simply explaining that Fex “is a very large city.” So, where is Fez?
According to what I can find, Fez (or Fes) is a city in Morocco, the third largest in the country. The city was founded in 789, so it has a really amazing history. It is actually the medieval capital of Morocco, with the old city still surrounded by an ancient wall. You can learn more about it here and here.
What do you think it is about Fez that Rory was drawn to? What does Rory’s travel dream say about her? And last, just for fun, what is YOUR dream travel destination??

i want to travel to Spain ! Madrid !
I always wondered why Fez was so hyped (especially since she never goes there lol). I mean.. maybe for its rich history? Or the writers picked it because it’s more obscure/not so cliché?
I take her desire to travel as just having an adventurous spirit, as well as a way for her to broaden her excessively intellectual mind. It’s clear that she can never be content with “knowing what she knows”, hence doing everything she can to learn and experience more. Reading about it is not enough!
Personally, I’m obsessed with Japanese culture, so naturally I dream of visiting Japan :).
My dream travel destination was Australia since I was like 6 years old and became addicted to “Skippy, the kangourou”. And I lived there so my life is complete! :-)
Now I have to check the US off my list.
Morroco eh… I always assumed it was in Turkey near Instanbul. Suspected the writers picked it because it rolls trippingly off the tonge, so nice to know that there is more to the city than just the sound of it. That Rory wants to travel speaks to the adventure and knowledge seeking nature of the young. I personally would be interested to see the far East or Italy, Greece, and Switzerland but only if I could arrive instantaneously at will and not have to deal with the plane flights to get there. Guess that leaves me in the USA!!
Well, I was thinking that because Lorelai and Rory watched Casablanca so many times, maybe that is what put Fez in her head. I was reading that Fez is 7 hours from Marrakech and you pass through Casablanca going from Fez to Marrakech.
I think the point is that it is good to dream and it almost doesn’t matter what the dream is. Dreams motivate you to do things you wouldn’t do otherwise.
