Samantha Who? 2.17 “The Dream Job”
Air Date: July 9, 2009
Recap & Discussion
After Winston hires her to head his charity foundation, Samantha hires Andrea to be her vice president of legal affairs; Dena, hoping to be a bridesmaid, offers to help Andrea with the wedding plans.
In this episode, we are now back on the pre-cancellation timeline (the last 3 were not edited to remove time discrepancies).
Samantha Who? Highlights:
- Sam now has a job, but she has NO idea what to do!
- Sam’s assistant, Tyler, gave her 8 different coffees, not knowing what she liked. Then Sam does a dance in her new office, which is really just a *huge* boardroom
- Who walks in on Sam dancing? Winston Funk, of course. He tries to romance her, while she wants to “find needy people” for his $30 million
- In a little power spat, it’s decided that Sam will hold a press conference the next day after she’s decided on her first charity contribution
- Turns out, that may be difficult. Tyler is in the lobby being mobbed by pitches from charities! Sam then revises the press conference to next Friday ;)
- Dena is begging Andrea to be in her wedding. She really wants to be a bridesmaid. Andrea hints that if Dena runs her errands, she’ll be in the wedding
- Andrea has picked a Southern Belle dress for Sam – to make her look horrible, so she herself can shine!
- Sam feels guilt now with the charities – thinking saying ‘yes’ to one is saying ‘no’ to thousands of others. Like a life / death situation.

Recap continues below…
- Sam realizes she needs the ‘old’ her, the one who wasn’t too soft to say no. And who’s the closest person to the old Sam? Andrea!
- Sam hires Andrea… for a salary that has something with a 9 in it ;)
- Sam pays a visit to Andrea at her new office only to find Andrea spending her time on wedding plans! Then she runs out for her own press conference with Tony Dane.
- Does Sam regret hiring Andrea? Is Andrea a good worker?
- A lawyer, a very qualified lawyer, comes to solicit Sam for a job. One more perfect for the position than Andrea.
- The lawyer grills Sam on her mission statement, which she of course doesn’t have yet. Having one could help narrow the focus of where to be charitable. Sam, realizing this lawyer knows her stuff and can help her choose reputable charities, hires the lawyer (asking first to make sure she’s not getting married)
- Regina tried to break her fridge to finally get a new one, but Howard refuses to give up on fixing it.
- Sam comes to ask her dad for advice about firing a friend. He’s no help.
- Dena comes by Sam’s place to find a book of sonnets to write Andrea’s vows, still hoping to be a bridesmaid!, but instead she finds the ring that Todd had bought for Sam!
- Dena can’t keep a secret, but Todd tells her about proposing to Sam before her accident. (Sam remembers this now, but he doesn’t know that)
- Todd has plans to pawn the ring so he can get his own place (wow, expensive ring). Dena tries to convince Todd that he’s giving up on Sam too quickly.
- Andrea, getting a pedicure in her ‘new office’, is on the phone quitting her old job with Chapman (quite rudely). Sam steals the phone cord.
- The new lawyer is walking in and Andrea still doesn’t know she’s fired. Unfortunately, Sam does a bad job of hiding everything and the two VP of Legal Affairs… they meet.
- Sam tries to calm down Andrea but ends up insulting her quite badly. Andrea says they’re still friends, but she’s no longer the maid of honor. AND, she’s not leaving work. See, Andrea’s a lawyer. And she signed a contract. So, she has no plans to leave her job.
- Who is the new maid of honor? Dena!! And she LOVES the Southern Belle dress. Sam decides to get payback by saying she’s not stepping down from her maid of honor duties… oh no, she plans to make them quite interesting. Sloppy Joes at the bridal shower!
- Faceoff! Andrea telling Sam her job is a joke – that Winston is just letting her have it to get into her pants. That’s why she blew off her work. So Sam tells Andrea it’s a joke to marry a gay guy just to get an actual wedding.
- The new lawyer, Cheril, has gone through the proposals and has determined that they are ALL ‘No’s.’ Even the red cross. And then she shares that she thinks they’re all showboaters asking for free rides.
- Sam brings up the economy, but Cheril is wise to the tactic. She won’t be fired either - she’s also signed a contract.
- Regina blew out the power to the whole region while trying to break her washer & dryer
- Howard electrocuted Sam to prove that her job is not a problem. It’s her dream job. So what if she’s stumbling a little?
- Sam worries that her job is a joke because of Winston. Howard shares that everyone is a fraud – it’s just a matter of standing up and facing work anyway. At the end of the talk, however, Howard has convinced himself that he wants to revise the rest of HIS life!!
- Sam takes charge of her job – reading all the proposals herself. Andrea watches as Sam exhausts herself with the process, but succeeds.
- Denton Homes for Homeless receives the first cheque for $250,000 (though she has to wrestle it from Cheril)
- Andrea hands in her resignation, telling Sam she’s wrong. Sam is not a joke.
- Sam admits to Andrea that they’re friends because they always tell each other things nobody else would. They’re brutally honest with each other.
- Andrea shares that her 6-year-old self still wants that dream wedding. The guys she meets are not ones she’d marry, and if she did, it’d be shotgun. With Tony, she can have her dream wedding because she knows it’s not a real relationship.
- Sam tells Andrea she wants her to stay and they can learn their new jobs together. Andrea has a plan to get rid of Cheril – though it may involve lying to a grand jury!
- Sam gets back her maid of honor hat, though it still looks like Dena is a bridesmaid
- Regina & Howard are attempting to make new dreams… though they may be thinking separately
- Todd didn’t get rid of the ring!!
