Why did Lorelai delay Christmas?

In ‘Santa’s Secret Stuff‘, Lorelai decides to delay Christmas because Rory has been away. However, I have always found this surprising. Now that Lorelai has another ‘daughter’ to consider, little GiGi, you’d think that such a young child would be terribly upset about the delay in such a big holiday. And that Christopher & Lorelai would understand this, above and beyond missing Rory.

So, though Rory did have a Christmas away from home with Logan, Lorelai didn’t even put up a tree, lights or have presents!! And GiGi doesn’t even seem upset about this whole thing – she enjoys going through ornaments and wearing Rory’s old antlers like it’s the best thing ever. Do you think that’s odd?

What do you think of Lorelai’s decision to delay Christmas? Should she have moved on with her life, her new family? Or was it right to delay everything for Rory?

  1. Laurie says:

Lorelai wanted to delay Christmas cause Rory would be in London and Lorelai didn’t want to spent Christmas with Chris and GG alone she wanted to spend Christmas all together like a regular family.

  2. Jessica King says:

Because Lorelai want wait and spend time with Rory for Christmas, she dont want spent Christmas with Chris and GG alone. She want all family for Chrismtas together.

  3. cheri says:

I don’t think that Lorelai ever felt comfortable in the marriage to Chris and knew that it was wrong so yes, I can see her wanting to wait and spend Christmas with Rory the way that she always had in the past. I did think that it was strange, however, that She and Chris didn’t do some things with GiGi. I didn’t think that it was fair for her to not get even a little bit of Christmas.

  4. Lynn says:

It does seem strange that such a little kid would be fine with not having Christmas presents or even a tree for Christmas. Although I’m sure Lorelai made it sound like fun to wait for Rory, since she was usually able to convince anyone of anything. I’m surprised that Christopher let it happen, you would think that his younger daughter would take priority in this case since she wouldn’t fully be able to understand why they didn’t celebrate on Christmas.

Perhaps the most surprising thing is that Rory would want to spend Christmas away from her family, given the fact that they had never spent Christmas together and her parents are now married. I’m in my mid 20′s and I wouldn’t spend Christmas with my boyfriend away from both of our families. That’s what the holiday season is supposed to be about, spending time with your family. The whole story line seemed wierd…

  5. Suzi says:

gigi isnt that old (or that bright to be honest from what we have seen) so they may have just told her it was x number of sleeps till xmas and she may have believed them.

The thing i hated about this is lorelai is really the big kid who get excited about snow and parties etc so no doubt xmas yet she managed to resist it all to wait for Rory. Little miss selfish on the other hand goes ahead and celebrates despite their agreement.

  6. Claire says:

    “little miss selfish”! lol!

I agree Gigi is too young to know that she has missed december 25th – if her parents tell her christmas is when big sis gets back then thats fine – I’m sure she wasn’t deprived of presents etc!

I don’t think that Lorelai wanted Rory there because she wasn’t comfortable with Chris I think this was her opportunity to have “the whole package” Mum, dad and the girls – I really think she wanted that.

As for Rory, it would have been impossible (& rude) for her not to celebrate with Logan. As you get older these things happen, she was right in my opinion to go spend time with him then – she knew that her mum wouldn;t be alone.

  7. Jan says:

I think that in some way lorelai didn’t ever feel comfortable with Christopher and especially GiGi so having a christmas without Rory would be like she had started a new family and ultimately she never really wanted this with Christopher. With Rory there it made it more realistic to lorelai.

  8. Cindy says:

i kind of do think it was because she felt uncomfortable with Christopher , but mostly i think it was poorly written.

  9. Andrea says:

I doubt a 4 (or freshly 5) year old knew what DATE Christmas was.She could see the lights around, etc, but she wasn’t “deprived” of anything! Whats a (less than two weeks!) wait for Christmas, when you don’t have a job, school, or a schedule of any kind. Jeeze. The travesty.

Lorelei didn’t feel comfortable, I agree.

Anyone think it is wierd for poor Georgia, aka GiGi, that Lorelie is thrown into her life, and then taken right out? I mean, we see her intereact with April after the ENGAGEMENT ends, but this little girl will nto see LG anymore? :( Wierd situation…
