In ‘French Twist‘, I’m left wondering, did Lorelai mean to marry Christopher, or was she simply swept off her feet?

Chris gave to Lorelai the most romantic trip to Paris anyone could dream up. He reminds Lorelai of how they had always dreamed of going to Paris together, and there they were. He gives her a private romantic dinner at a restaurant all to themselves. And Lorelai is being wrapped up in perfect words and perfect deeds – perfectly content herself to let them sweep her along. When Chris tells Lorelai he doesn’t “wanna wait”, and Lorelai says it’s too soon, Chris just reminds her that it’s taken them 25 years to get to where they are now. Put that way, how could Lorelai argue?
I think Lorelai was just too tired to think. She had spent so long trying to do everything the right way, that Christopher simply offered Lorelai a way to shut off her thoughts and just let someone else do the thinking. But we know Lorelai, and we know that she is governed by her head as well as her heart, so perhaps this all foreshadows the inevitability of this relationship not working out. Indeed, when Lorelai comes home, she seems confused by what she’d just done…

I watched this episode only once and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to go through it again.
That was terrible and completely out of character.
Lorelai saying “I love you” repeatidly? (the only time she said it to Luke was when she gave him an ultimatum and SHE proposed to HIM! So we can assume she loved him very much. I read an article then in the New York Times where a journalist mentionned the fact that she had never heard “I love you said” so much in the show and most of the time for no good reasons) Come on! Lorelai getting married without having Rory there? Come on!
And Chris is so annoying, pretending to be the perfect guy and showing off with all his money. He always feels like he has to overdo. He’s so pathetic and so uninteresting. What does Lorelai see in this guy?!
I wasn’t just mad because the wedding postponed a Luke and Lorelai reconciliation. But because it was completely not Gilmoresque. Everything was flat in this episode and boring.
Not to mention all the French clichés… I’m sorry but not all the French peopleare wearing a béret, eating baguette at 4 in the morning and refusing to help for directions!
You know, considering that Amy-Sherman Palledino had nothing to do with the series at this point, the theme of this episode kind of reeks of her type of irony. If you think about it, the marriage did not prove to be the beginning for Chris and Lorelai but the beginning of the end of their 25 on/off relationship. And while overall Season 7 was slower-paced, less funny, and (I’m just gonna say it) boring, it’s nice to see that the new writers at least tried keep some of the shows former qualities alive and well. That is, IF they had this whole season planned out ahead of time and didn’t just respond to harsh criticism from the fans.

In answer to the question [which is kind of the point... :-)] Lorelai was definitely pushed. She was weak then and he knew that.
But at the same time Christopher didn’t not threaten her nor was she swept off your feet.
She made it clear in season 3 that she was dying to have the whole package. She said it again in “Partings” saying that she was ready for the next step in her life: marriage and kids.
She thinks that Luke, the only man she ever loved and with whom she pictured a future, failed her.
Christopher’s proposal probably appears to her like her last chance to get what she wants, without necessarily evaluating the consequences of a rushed wedding.
After all, sure they had some kind of connection but they never lived together or spent a lot of time together, non-stop.
I think at this point she was blinded by Christopher’s overact and still curing from her breakup with Luke. She probably thought that would help her get better.
Think she just got swept along by the romance of the whole scenario. Also the writers may have felt it leveled the playing field as luke had had a failed marriage already by that point.
With Mac here though – no way in hell she would have done it with out rory there. Also think she would have considered telling luke before hand.
I did not like this episode. I definately think that marry Chris was not what she wanted to do but was some what swept away with the romance of the situation but also I think that after the whole Luke situation that she was a little afraid that she was never going to get married and this was her last chance. Also I agree with Mac and Suzi, the idea of Lorelai getting married without Rory is completely insane as this is something Lorelai would never have done previously.
I don’t think see meant to merry Chris i think it was just a rebound from the Luke situation. Yes it would have been for her to merry Chris when Rory was younger but Lorelai is in live with Luke. Plus Chris push Lorelai to get maried without Rory and it didn’t work out cause Chris was jealous of Luke even when Lorelai amd Luke was friends and vise versa. But Lorelai wanted it to work but it didn’t hapened cause she was still in love with Luke.
I hate this episode,I dont like when Chris pushly Lorelai make marry him without Rory there in Paris.Lorelai look not happy when Chris don’t want Rory come and see us at wedding in Paris, just want rush.Chris don’t care and Lorelai look hurt without Rory.I know Lorelai still in love with Luke.
I think Lorelai loved Chris, but she was never in love with him. I think her marrying him was part being swept off her feet, part not wanting to be alone the rest of her life and part her genuine love and adoration for Chris. And no, I don’t think if Lorelai had been in her right mind at this time of the series, she would have never gotten married without Rory. I mean when she was engaged to Luke she wouldn’t even set a date for the wedding until all was well with Rory, so the fact that she got married without Rory was way off to me. I never hated Chris, in fact, his character grew on me. But since day one of this show we all knew Lorelai and Luke were destined to be together. What a shame we never got see their wedding.
Yes she was definitely rushed and jumped into it – it was completely out of character for her to do that without Rory there & it was too soon after the split with Luke but I do think that she genuinely loved him. He really love her and I liked hearing them tell each other that – that is one thing that REALLY bugged me about Luke & Lorelai, they never tell each other this unless it is in a fight! When you’re in love you tell the person.
Like Lorelai said to Luke – she needs to hear it once in a while – Luke didn’t tell her and Chris did, she was vulnerable and needed it.
I love the intimacy and chemistry between the two of them in this episode – I think watching it that it is hard to say they are not in love, they are like a honeymooning couple! They beef that I have with this ep is the completely unrealistic timescale that goes on from when they wake up at 4am till the eat dinner at 5am… I couldn’t achieve all they do in that hour in a day!
Up, out for a walk for food, back to the hotel, have sex, sleep, shower, change and get back out to the restaurant? Insania!!!
Dilithium crystal consumption anyone?!!!
I always felt that this episode was the result of a perfect storm of emotion – Lor was tired, weak, and vulnerable from her struggle with season 6 Luke – Chris was desperate to make up for lost time. He saw a window of opportunity, and took it. It was clearly a recipe for disaster, but it had to be played out.
I never could understand the hatred of Chris throughout the run of this series – I thought he was a great, flawed character (beautifully played by Sutcliff), who was truly in love with Lor. Just wasn’t meant to be.
Regis, I completely agree with you about Lorelai and Chris – they had to let it happen otherwise there would always have been a niggling doubt in their minds that they had lost out on their “one”.
They both rushed into it yes but neither one was more to blame than the other – and I completely agree with you about David Sutcliffe’s portrayal of Christopher. A beautifully passionate and flawed character, I found him endearing throughout – this is perhaps the only character I can say this about. I suppose he wasn’t in the show as often as the others, but I too never understood how a character who showed so much adoration to the leads could generate so much hate against him! I wonder what I am missing!
Apologies for the grammar etc in my last few posts – insomnia is driving me insane and have practically lost power of speech!
OMMGGG tht was a terrible episode!.
I HATE CHRISTOPHER ever since he tried to brake up Lorelai and Luke…
In my defense…. she dosnt go goood with chris AT ALL!
Lorelai+ Luke= Looovveeee!!!!!!!
FOREVER!
