In ‘Lorelai’s First Cotillion,’ Lorelai confesses to not having told Emily directly about her breakup with Luke. She’s worried Emily will be mean about the news. However, when Lorelai drops the news, Emily disinterestedly says “that’s too bad,” while Richard only says “Hmm.”

The conversation moves so quickly from the topic of Luke that Lorelai seems almost affronted. Mad that they didn’t fight her. She tries to bring it up, to get it all into the open, but Emily & Richard say they’ve moved on. Lorelai gets even more offended. Later, at home, Lorelai admits that she may need her parents’ freakouts to “know I’m doing what I wanna do”.
Does Lorelai need Emily’s anger to justify her actions towards Luke? Should Lorelai be questioning her likes and dislikes because of her new revelation that they may be based on doing whatever displeases her parents? And how, if at all, does all of this lead to Lorelai returning to Christopher?

You are left to wonder what the writers’ intention was to create such an emotionally immature character. That she still feels the need to act up like the unacknowledged teen at almost 40 is a pain to watch. Too bad she didn’t ask the shrink about that.
Lorelai has an unhealthy fixation on her parents, it seems like she never was her own person. Maybe she would have never seen Luke in that certain light, if Emily hadn’t pointed it out in early season 1.
She came prepared for a fight, and when her parents brushed her off she thought: Oh No, You don’t control this (me), if I want a fight I get a fight! She was clearly upset about the breakup and needed to work off her anger.
To be honest, I never quite understood the reasoning Lorelai had in this episode.
She’s mad her parents don’t judge her for her breakup while she always reproched them to judge her before.
I guess they didn’t react because they were not really surprised. They knew things were going downhill and with the wedding being postponed…
I just wonder what Emily would have said if she had known that the same night of her breakup Lorelai slept with Christopher.
I know she was thrilled about the matching later but I’m not sure she would have liked what lead to it…
But at any rate, her parents’ reaction (or lack of it) justifies her returning to Christopher.
That was STUPID.
Well, good question.Emily look don’t care that Lorelai and Luke broke up like what happen with So… Good Talk on season 5.
classic case of seeking parental approval?
