As kind of a nice break, ‘Driving Miss Gilmore‘ somewhat breaks up all the tension between Luke & Lorelai by adding some crazy Emily Gilmore moments. So I thought we’d take a break from talking about relationships and instead talk about the Rory Gilmore building!
Early on in this episode, Emily & Richard announce that they’ve decided to take Rory’s Yale tuition, which is now being paid by Christopher, and donate it to Yale in Rory’s name. Whether they’re just upstaging Christopher, I’m not sure, but what they’ve done is create a fund towards something, like the Rory Gilmore auditorium. It may be some other building, but with Rory’s name very central.
We don’t see until the next episode that they’ve decided on “The Rory Gilmore Astronomy Building”. But here’s my question – what happened to it?? Did they ever finish it? Or is this something that maybe we would have seen in the future of the series, if it had continued (it does take a while to build something, after all!). What do you think?

Another question is why an astronomy building? Rory has no particular interest in astronomy.
Why not a Rory Gilmore Journalism Scholarship or Journalism Building?
This was always one of the more insane [though totally tangential] ideas in the series. For all their talk about wealth, there is no way the Gilmore’s could have come up with the 20 million plus to even think about such a thing. If they could, there is no way Floyd could have financially squeezed Richard to dump Jason at the end of season 4.
I do agree that there’s no way the Gilmore’s have quite that much money on hand. I could see them downgrading it in a future episode to a Rory Gilmore wing in some building or having something dedicated to her. The model they show her is pretty fantastic though. Perhaps they were planning on putting some money in there now and adding more each year, hoping it’ll gain enough interest to be built in the distant future.

I forgot about that! If they were ever to make a Gilmore Girls movie, hint hint, I think that they should incorporate the building!
I have always thought the same as john on this one – either journalism due to rorys interests or medicine as there are several mentions in the show of the family donating to hospitals. Emily mentions something when richard is in hospital and Trix mentions something along those lines as well. Talking of trix.. I was always confused as to how the names trix and rory came from the name lorelai – any suggestions?
In the current environment, naming rights go with being the principal donor to a new buiding project so no chance to “piggy-back” the name on currently being built structures. I always thought an endowment worth 2x to 3x Rory’s total tuition to fund scholarships or a professorial chair for women in journalism would make the most sense, but of course that kind of gift gets minimal short-term or even no notice and the Gilmore’s were all about being in the limelight and staying memorable with their charitable works.
I also agree with John. A Rory Gilmore Journalism Scholarship would have been a much better idea as it is the right amount of money. Also to Suzi Rory comes from Lorelai because of Lory but it didn’t sound like a proper name and Trix was just a name that Richard called his mother and she wanted Emily to call her that to even though she doesn’t even like Emily.
Another thing I would like to say is Dani a Gilmore Girls movie would be fabulous I have loved Gilmore Girls forever and there are so many things the writers need to explain more so they should definately talk about the Rory Gilmore Astronamy building and Rory and Logans relationship because you can’t end something like that…
