Contrasting Parties

In ‘Super Cool Party People,’ we’re given the picture of Lorelai ‘enjoying’ herself at two very different parties.

At Lane’s reception, Lorelai gave an inappropriate toast, auditioned for America’s Next Top Model on the reception tape, and started a secret club for “super cool party people.” Why nobody dragged her away from the party, I have no idea. But, at least the whole town decided to deceive Luke and not tell them what Lorelai said during her toast….

And then we contrast that with April’s birthday party. Luke’s planning was disastrous, and he absolutely refused Lorelai’s help. But, when he fails at it, Lorelai comes to the rescue and throws an amazing makeover sleepover party. Did she do this to show Luke she can be involved with April? To see April? To prove to herself that things with Luke were ok? Or just because she’s a good friend?

No matter the motive, I think we’re being given a contrast here – of Lorelai and her pain and how that’s showing itself in these parties. What do you think?

Seize the day. Live in the moment, Lorelai.

A chance to share her girlie joys.

Luke asked for her help and of course she responded to him. The chance to play teenybopper party girl is just a pulse.

  2. Jay Mc says:

I do not like lorelai when she drinks too much. She ends up doing dumb things.

    Sleeping with Chris after…….

    Marrying Chris in France.

Acting up at the reception.(some of it did sound funny)

I think that Lorelai going to help at Aprils party was an ideal way for her to show Luke that they can be part of April’s life TOGETHER. I imagine that it would have been an exremely positive step in their relationship had it not been for Anna’s completely OTT reaction.

I also think that part of why she threw herself so wholeheartedly into it was because she felt guilty over the fiasco at Lane’s wedding. She had aired their dirty laundry in public and he was none the wiser! It would be a catharsis to show that she was really there for him.

In terms of her speech & her situation with Chris & Rory – there’s always one! I know it’s been me in the past! It’s easy to decide to drown your sorrows but it generally blows up in your face! I think Christopher was a sweetheart taking her home and sitting with her etc.

From what i’ve seen on this site I’m guessing i’m in the complete minority as a fan of Christopher! I’m afraid I’d take him over Luke any day!!!

I never approved of the town hiding Lorelai’s heartfelt speech at Lane’s wedding.
Maybe if Rory or one of the townies had told him how miserable she was maybe he would have acted up.
I love the speech she gives at the wedding. It breaks my heart every time. But at the same time, I feel ashamed for her, exposing her trouble to everyone like this…

About Super Cool Party People: Lorelai has always been there for Luke -and vice versa- so when he calls in need for help she doesn’t ask any questions, she just comes.
Plus, I do think that she saw that as an opportunity to meet April, maybe to bond and show how great they can be all together.

I really hate the was Anna reacted. Her attitude was just stupid.
She had no right to lecture Luke about Lorelai’s involvement in the party. They didn’t do anything wrong and April never complained. She was thrilled and “the party was a smash”.
I blame Luke for letting Anna take control like this and let Lorelai slip away…

The question I have about this episode is: what exactly does Lorelai know she said about Luke? She knows something (ie her conversation at the diner with Luke and then Patty) but no one ever is shown telling her. Does she know what she said?

  6. Arieanna Schweber says:

Good question Amy – I wonder if maybe Rory told her? Or maybe she has a fuzzy feeling about it?

But yeah, I think Luke handled everything with Anna horribly. He should have been up-front from the beginning with Anna about Lorelai – I never knew why he hid her. Anna was crazy about it, sure, but Luke started hiding things first. That doesn’t help with trust.

  7. Jessica King says:

I hate Anna yelling and mean to Luke about Lorelai, just help for April and her party.

  8. Caro says:

Well, let’s take it one step at the time… I believe that Lorelai rushed in to help Luke mainly because he needed her. It has always been this way between the two of them, like when Luke showed up at her house as soon as she called him after their first break up or when she wrote that letter for the custody trial. However, I felt it was obvious that Lorelai was happy to finally interact with April and that she was hoping for a positive change after this.
About Anna, I think that her behaviour about the whole thing was only half-overreacted. I mean, put yourselves in her place: the woman trusted Luke, but she knew nothing about Lorelai. For what she knew, her daughter had spent a night alone with who could have been a psichopat. We all know and love Lorelai, for sure, but Anna didn’t. She was just worried.
