Was The Dress Bad Luck?

In ‘The Perfect Dress‘, Lorelai seems discomfited that everything with the wedding is going smoothly… too perfectly.

In one day, Lorelai went from having no ideas to having the entire wedding planned out. At first, Lorelai is thrilled by the perfection of it all coming together so easily – from the date to the location to the dress, which started it all. Lorelai thinks it’s a sign – then it begins to snow (and we know what that means!)

Luke, meanwhile, is in a panic about the wedding being in just 5 months. He looks like he’s burdened with it, and maybe Lorelai picks up on that vibe. Later Lorelai tells Rory that she’s worried that being “too easy” may not be a good thing:

“What if the dress is really a bad sign and not a good sign? What if the dress is telling me that it’s so right it’s wrong?”

Rory reminds Lorelai that the snow never lies and that everything will be great – Lorelai won’t bail (which is her fear). Later, Lorelai is looking at her dress and thinks that Paul Anka is barking at it because something is “weird” about it. Luke comes home later, after a couple of talks with Anna, and seemingly eager to finally share his big news with Lorelai. However, Lorelai had been trying on her dress and decides to come down wearing it (despite Luke saying it’s “bad luck”). Luke doesn’t tell Lorelai anything….

So, was the dress bad luck? Is Lorelai right to suspect something is amiss with her wedding? Or does something only go amiss because Luke continues to be dishonest after seeing her in the dress? And how does the dress decide that for him?

I never understood why he didn’t tell her anything just because she was wearing the dress. That would have been the perfect opportunity.
I don’t think seeing a dress before marriage is bad luck, but in that case it was. Unfortunately…

There are so many symbols in Gilmore Girls, and often all of them are hidden by some other ones so that to apprehend the whole scene, it is important to have them all in mind.

However, is it in Lorelai character to marry someone? That question is never answered, even at the end of GG. Yes, she got married once, and divorced all the same. The question is? Did she really give a chance to that marriage, or even to herself?

Her character is more like a stream that goes freely down the mountain and never feels easy if caught.

If she had married, would so many fans around the world be full of expectations about a GG movie, and see that lucky Luke luckily married to Lorelai?

Firstly I hated that dress. The bodice is so odd shaped and Lauren/Lorelai is so beautiful I never understood why that particular dress was selected. Maybe it was chosen because it is odd and their entire situation at that time is odd. I mean, how can Luke go off on Lorelai demanding no secrets between them and he holds back on quite possibly the biggest secret a man could hold back on. Urghhhh so frustrating.
No the dress wasn’t bad luck, it was the writers tormenting us.

Considering the “busy-body” quotient in Starrs Hollow and by inference all of the other small towns in the area, the idea that a normally repsonsible guy like Luke could have fathered a child yet somehow never checked in on his previous partner or never heard about the child through the grapevine it is asinine. Just further rediculously lazy “crisis -of-the-week” writing!!

ok. so not relavent but i heard that Lauren was gonna be on Rachel Ray sometime soon. not sure when though.

Luke didn’t check in on Rachel either after she left. Anna left the town and they were broken up before she found out, so to him Anna was just another ex. I think, considering Luke’s aversion against children, she made sure nobody knew who the father was, because Anna didn’t believe Luke would be a decent father. The storyline is only a little shady, but not completely unbelieveable.
I personally believe the occurence of April ruined the show and you could go on for hours discussing if Luke was right by not telling Lorelai. He was maybe afraid of Anna forbidding him contact with his daughter when there was another woman, which was stated in later episodes. We know, for Luke family always comes first, so does that mean he didn’t consider Lorelai family although they were engaged? That’s a little unbelieveable considering their history. Or was he afraid that Lorelai wouldn’t want to get married, because she would be jealous of Anna like he was jealous of Christopher. Luke acted leally stupid by not accepting Lorelai’s help in that situation. All in all very confusing and tiring.

The dress wasn’t bad luck, it was poor writing that caused this.

Oh it was’nt the Dress That was the Problem, It was a little 12 yr old Girl named April, That Jacked everything up, So In Return it’s that little Twent’s Fault, Not Luke, Not Lorelai, But April & Anna

  8. Amy says:

What I hated about this entire episode was that Sookie and Lorelai planned everything in a day without any input at all from Luke. Sure its funny that Sookie was the BFOTB, but for a wedding to be planned without the groom at all? Little weird.

That Anna would not tell Luke – unquestionably true, that Luke would not check in -seems unlikely [and that the writers don't have him checking in on Rachael doesn't mean it didn't happen, just that we were never told about it since it did not affect the plot direction]. The biggest bogey for me is the insistence of the Stars Hollow townies for checking out everything fit to gossip about and certainly they could have found out about Anna having a child without expending much effort at all.

I think the dress was just a poor choice in general. It didn’t really fit her properly and wasn’t flattering at all.

  11. Mac says:

Amy, I couldn’t agree with you more.

I always found it very odd that the wedding was completely planned out without Luke’s input.
Him and Lorelai are so close until episode 6×08 (with the beautiful scene of Luke getting down on his knees to comfort Lorelai metaphorically crushed by Paul Anka’s sickness) and so protective of each other. Then all of a sudden they tear apart and lose their unbelievable connection.
    Nice screwing work, writers! :(

I’m sure Luke would have like being part of the whole wedding organisation. Sometimes Lorelai doesn’t have enough faith in him. Just like when she freaked out in season 5 when she thought she was pregnant. Not once did it occur to her that Luke would have been thrilled to become a father, especially of her child.
