Air Date: April 16, 2009
Recap [Spoilers]

While with her parents are in Vegas attending a real estate seminar, Samantha (Christina Applegate) loses a huge sum of money at the craps table and finds herself in debt to the casino. But a chance meeting with her ex-boss, billionaire Winston Funk (Billy Zane), could be the answer to her financial trouble. Meanwhile, when Dena (Melissa McCarthy) asks Andrea (Jennifer Esposito) for a big favor, she agrees – but only if Dena consents to fake a situation that could help boost Andrea’s sagging public approval ratings as she plans her wedding to pro-basketball player Tony Dane (McKinley Freeman).

  • Samantha is promoting an open house when Winston Funk drives by and asks her if things are well since she quit
  • Sam decides she wants to tell her mom that she wants to quit doing real estate. She feels like she left her job to do great things but has hit a dead end.
  • Dena visits Andrea at work to ask a favor, though Andrea is surprised to learn Dena is a teacher. Dena wants Andrea to get a basketball signed by Tony Dane for a school auction, hoping it would land her a job at the school full-time
  • Andrea is upset because public polls show that she’s heartless and people would rather see Tony Dane gay than marry her. Andrea hatches a plan to make people like her and it involves a chocking Dena.
  • Regina (Jean Smart) convinces Sam to go to Las Vegas with her, but it turns out to be a trick to go to a real estate convention
  • Sam refuses to go to the seminar, instead she’s drawn to the casino. They apparently know her there and have a $50,000 credit in her name there. Sam slips into gambling but…
  • Sam loses $100,000! She lost her first $50k and they lent her another $50k, which she also lost
  • Regina is happy – Sam has to keep working with her to pay off her debt
  • Andrea gives Dena a croissant to choke on, but a boy scout tries to help Dena and Andrea pushes him down, hurting him.

  • Sam tries to get her money back from the casino, even begging on her knees, but that doesn’t work
  • Funk catches Sam still on her knees, which flusters her. But she confesses everything, including her frustration with her mom.
  • Funk understands the appeal the table had for Sam – the joy of it. He tries to use it as an opening to come back and work for him again – that she can work the money off. Sam refuses, saying “it’s just another street corner.” He even offers to pay off her debt.
  • To pay off her debt, Sam holds a garage sale outside her apartment.
  • Andrea holds a press conference about the boy breaking his arm, and he uses her guilt, and the cameras, to get her to go to his prom
  • Todd (Barry Watson) offers to sell some of his sports memorabilia for Sam, including a $2k football phone – the one Sam had given as a bribe to Frank (Tim Russ). She declines his offer ;)
  • Sam was considering taking Funk up on his offer until some sleuthing with Todd uncovers that Funk owns that casino! Sam remembers that she never played at the casino with her own money and that she never won. She thinks Funk lured her and her mother there with a fake conference
  • Sam, instead of deciding to stay away from Funk, takes it as a challenge to “beat the house” at his own game
  • Sam goes to see Funk for an interview / demand a job – she doesn’t want her old job back, she wants to run something philanthropic. He agrees.
  • Andrea goes to prom with the boy, and it turns out that it was Dena’s idea – the boy gives Dena the signed ball Andrea had given her, so Dena got what she wanted. Andrea takes pity on the unpopular boy and goes to his prom.
  • While Funk is already hitting on her, Sam starts her new job by making a statement to the press. She’s been made Vice President of the Winston-Funk Foundation and her statement indicates the charity hasn’t met its giving goals in past years, but that Funk has offered $30 million a year for her to spend, at her sole discretion, now.
  • Funk, looking like he could choke, has no choice but to follow Sam’s lead
  • Regina is excited – she sold a house! She found her motivation — her disappointment in Sam. Nice.
  • Todd, playing the ukelaile and looking quite calm, asks Sam if she wants to go out on Saturday (finally!!) and Sam says yes!
