Samantha Who? 1.14 "The Affair"
Air Date: May 5, 2008
Recap & Discussion

Samantha Who? Episode Highlights:

  • Sam and Todd are passionately making out… even though Todd is still with Chloe!
  • When keys jangle in the door, there is panic. But it’s just Frank, the doorman, dropping off a package as per Todd’s instructions earlier [Sam is 'hiding' under the couch cushions]
  • Todd tries to explain his mistakes with Chloe to Frank, who really just wants to drop off the package
  • Andrea thinks Sam is loving the adrenaline of having an affair with Todd – she loved being the ‘other woman’ as Old Sam
  • Andrea notices the coffee shop is a little quiet and thinks she could double its business if she bought it – along with fun, like firing people. Dena wants to help – name it "AnDena" (what happened to their fight?)
  • Andrea points out that Sam only started liking Todd after Chloe was dating him – Sam realizes she likes the buzz
  • Regina is dressed up very elegantly and with lots of cleavage – to play bridge with the girls, she claims. But can’t name the friends and mixes it up with golf. Suspicious.

  • Todd is late meeting Sam – he wanted to be partially honest with Chloe by actually playing basketball, his cover story
  • Todd saying that he couldn’t remember his own friends’ names when Chloe asked him makes Sam think Regina wasn’t going to play golf… that she’s having an affair
  • Todd thinks Sam is projecting because she’s having an affair and feels guilty.
  • Todd wants to break up with Chloe, but Sam isn’t sure yet if he’s getting off on the affair
  • When Sam mentions her "unfounded fears" that Regina was having an affair to Dena and Andrea, they get up to ask the price to buy the coffee show
  • Sam demands to know what they’re hiding, which is that they caught Regina out dressed up a few years ago, not wearing her wedding ring. She had bolted once confronted. Sam now thinks Regina has been having an affair for years.
  • Is she buying sexy lingerie? Sam digs through Regina’s drawers to find out, thinking that’s a sure-indicator of having an affair. Her dad finds her, so Sam lies and says she was looking for money for a concert, for a band called Lancelot
  • Howard thinks Sam is a junkie, and brings it up at the dinner table (Sam thought he was going to uproot the affair). He had looked up Lancelot and found it didn’t exist. Regina thinks she’s into drugs too.
  • Todd is getting turned off, again, by Sam’s talk of Regina’s affair (and panties). But, despite paying $300 for the hotel, Sam is completely distracted.
  • Sam invites Andrea and Dena to follow Regina with her (Dena has a little experience in stalking). Regina is greeted by a man.
  • Dena is thrilled that Andrea said "we" in some reference to the cafe they want to run
  • Sam runs after Regina and accuses her of having an affair. Regina admits to a name – Rory. Regina will not be judged by her for it, since Sam has done it a thousand times.
  • Sam decides to talk with Howard about Regina. He thinks she’s on drugs so Sam drags him out to go pick up Regina, telling him about the affair on the way
  • There’s a lot of traffic, so Sam goes in to get her mom… and finds that the "affair" is not what it seems. Regina is a hostess at a restaurant - and takes off her wedding ring to get bigger tips. The lingerie is for Howard.
  • Regina says the job was the only thing in her life she didn’t have to account for – it was just hers. She told Sam it was an affair thinking Sam would keep that secret. Regina having a job would make Howard feel he had failed her, and she didn’t want that
  • Howard found parking… Regina lies to him and tells him she was going to have an affair, rather than tell him about her job. Howard says he’s been neglecting Regina, so Regina works a few gift suggestions in there. Sam takes guests to the table when they arrive
  • Sam tells Todd she wants to be the one upstairs, not the one hiding. He chooses to be with Sam. Sam gloats about Todd being her boyfriend to Frank.
  • The closing scene is Sam, walking in her colorful outfit in a sea of black business clad men and women

What does the last scene signify in the whole scheme of things? Are there times when lying is done out of love and respect? Why didn’t Todd end things with Chloe right away?
