Discussion Questions:

  • Why does Emily want to help Sookie on her wedding?
  • Why does Sookie fall for Emily’s plans?
  • Does Jess take off so Rory can find him and drag him back?
  • Why does Jess let Rory boss him around?
  • Is Emily right about why Lorelai ran to help Luke?
  • Does Lorelai go the extra mile to help Luke because of what Emily said, about them being ‘made for each other’?
  • If the town was behind Luke, why didn’t they go to the funeral?
  • Did Jess set up the wake?
  • Do you find it odd that Dean wasn’t in this episode to continue his over-protectiveness of Rory?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

Emily is calling over and over to leave messages – Lorelai won’t pick up on principle. But does talk back to the machine. Emily does like to rant.

Emily comes to the Inn to test 8 soups for her DAR meeting. Taking her a long time. Emily overhears that it’s Sookie’s wedding and wants to know what’s planned. She gets an "oh" for Sookie’s choice of music for the wedding. She suggests a string quartet.

Luke calls Lorelai at the Inn to rent 9 rooms – his Uncle Louie died and he’s planning the funeral. Lorelai offers to help.

They find, later, that Luke has his hands full (literally) at the diner trying to run it and plan the funeral at the same time. Lorelai and Rory immediately pitch in. And Lorelai is the Jehovah’s coffee girl there to convert the patrons to strong coffee.

Rory goes up to drag Jess down to help in the diner. Lorelai suspects Kirk of stealing Equal so dumps a bunch in his coffee to prove her point. Luke is on hold trying to get his uncle’s body shipped from Florida. His dad asked Luke to take care of a good funeral for his brother before he died. He was a war veteran, so the town war re-enactor’s will do a formal salute. Lorelai offers to man the diner while he runs errands.

Taylor is furious to find a farmer’s market in the town square across from his market. And feels quesy to find the previous wanna-be troubadour has followed the rules to open his market.

Emily comes to meet with Sookie to go over the place setting samples sent over by a company that did Celine Dion’s wedding. Sookie’s simple plans have exploded. Lorelai cautions Sookie – she’s in Emily Land, where cost has a different meaning.

Taylor is mumbling "turnips" to himself. Lorelai is helping with Luke’s lunch rush and is taking great pleasure in the diner lingo. Farmer’s Market guy comes in to gloat about his business so Taylor can overhear – Doose’s has been dead. Lorelai brings lunch to Luke – he’s disappointed that none of his relatives are coming to the funeral. Doesn’t think there is an excuse not to pay respects to a dead family member. He wants to do it as his father wished.

Sookie has fallen into Emily’s net quite securely and Jackson is worried. His simple sweet wedding has been replaced by a huge production involving an orchestra and moving the town gazebo. Rory is dragging Jess back to the diner again.

Jess is actually at a town meeting. Rory asks why he’s there. Pretends he had nothing better to do. But stares and smiles at her. Taylor airs a grievance about the farmer’s market. Taylor says it’s the wrong permit, even though it’s a very minor issue. They adjourn the meeting – not ‘feeling good’ about it is not a town issue. Rory tells Jess to go clean the diner.

Luke runs after the re-enactors – who apparently don’t want to go to the funeral. They hated Louie. Luke says he deserves a veteran’s funeral. Luke says he may just throw things at them now – and they say he is a defensive hothead like Louie.

Sookie is wrapped up in midget angels and paper mache mushrooms. Lorelai brings up the Emily World dangers. Sookie doesn’t even know the cost. Lorelai says all these things are not Sookie and that Jackson is upset. When Lorelai asks her what she wants – she has a moment. Sookie realizes she doesn’t want any of it.

Luke calls for Lorelai’s help – the casket won’t close because of all the stuff Louie wanted to buried with. He is fed up. His uncle was a selfish jerk. He leaves. But later calms down and orders a bigger casket.

Emily comes to yell at Lorelai for interfering in Sookie’s wedding. Lorelai knows that Emily was actually planning her wedding – the one she wanted Lorelai to have. Emily says it was all for Sookie – that Lorelai’s was to be a Romanoff winter theme. Emily says she gave up on that dream and then comments that she’s probably standing in the reception room (the diner). Emily is referring to Luke – that it’s ‘obvious’. Gloats at Lorelai saying she ‘had to be there’ for Luke.

Lorelai is the only one to stand with Luke at the funeral. Luke wants assurance from Lorelai that he is not becoming Louie – the cranky old bachelor. Lorelai brings up all the amazing things Luke does: the chuppa, the coffee cake for Rory, taking in Jess. Louie gets his military send off – thanks to Lorelai. Lorelai takes Luke’s arm as the salute proceeds.

A reception / wake for Louie is being held at the diner. Lorelai didn’t set it up. Though she says people probably did it for him – people like Luke. The produce guy tells Taylor he’s done – he sold all his produce. Reminds Taylor that he put himself through all the angst.

Rory goes to say Jess did a good thing, with the wake. He says he didn’t do it – the town did. But Rory says he ‘facilitated’ and welcomes him to the town. Everyone is telling their favorite stories about Louie.

  3. Jessica King says:

Wow Rory really bossy to Jess for go to work and help for Luke at diner this episode.I love that part of Lorelai alway help Luke at diner and Emily think maybe she work at diner and like Luke too,but Lorelai told her that she said no,just help and Luke and Lorelai just a friend that all.

  4. Bianca says:

This is my favorite episode of all the seasons! I love when emily says when she leaves the dinner that they are a match made in heaven! Also I love at the end of the episode when they are at the funeral and she is the only one there! I love all the Luke and Lorelai scenes! I also love the Rory and Jess parts of this episode!

  5. Pamela says:

I agree w/Bianca – even Emily recognizes the sparks between Lorelei & Luke – something to be said for a mother’s intuition. Emily is kind of humourous in this scene.

  6. Jillian says:

This episode is tied as being my absolute favorite GG episode ever! Not only because the town meeting in unforgetably funny but Lorelai is so sassy and spunky. She springs into action helping Luke out even when she didn’t really have to in some ways I think it’s to make up for the times he was there for her. Lorelai and Luke’s relationship is so tight and intergrated in this episode that it makes this episode my favorite. Luke truly appreciates everything Lorelai does for him and she is happy to do them. One of the most touching moments is when they are at Louie’s funeral. Luke is feeling discouraged from what the war reinactors said to him. Lorelai reassures him and then the reinactors come by. Maybe Lorelai did talk to them but I think they eventually came to their senses and went to support Luke. Of course Emily’s observations on Lorelai and Luke’s relationship was priceless. The only thing that bothers me about this episode is how in a few more episodes L/L’s closeness is broken apart in a nasty way. Unfortunately it seems to be their pattern. The closer they get, the further apart they become. I just wish we got a chance to see them break that cycle once and for all.

  7. Tanner says:

Taylor: This is a cart kiosk cart kiosk permit. This is not vaild for your business.

Produce Guy: Why’d you say it twice?

    Taylor: What?

Babette: You said cart kiosk cart kiosk.

    Lorelai: It’s repetitive.

    Rory: And redundant.

    Lorelai: It’s repetitive.

    Rory: And redundant.

Lorelai: We certainly are entertaining Mac.

    Rory: Indubitably Tosh.
