Discussion Questions:

  • Rory won’t tell Paris her scores – is she afraid to hurt / anger Paris, to taunt her, or just not one to gloat?
  • Lorelai owns her home – how can she be worth nothing to the bank? And how did she expect to finance the Inn?
  • Why won’t Lorelai accept money from her parents? Or from Luke?
  • Did Emily suggest the bank, knowing it would be a co-signed loan, in order for Lorelai to retain her independence?
  • Do you think Rory would have laughed at Lane about cheerleading?
  • Why are there always strings with Emily?
  • Do you think it odd that the Paris / Rory PSAT storyline was not followed-through further?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

Rory got the results of her PSATs. 740 verbal, 760 math (each out of a possible 800). Rory is upset that her math score is higher than her verbal one – it’s her thing. But, she did kick ass. Luke congratulates her.

Lorelai wakes up in a good mood because of the snow – until she puts her foot through her porch. Termites. They have attacked the house foundation. Kirk estimates $15,000 to fix, not including fumigation.

Paris is fishing for Madeline and Louise to ask her PSAT scores. Paris got 750 math, 730 verbal – so Rory did better! Paris wants to know what Rory got, but Rory won’t say. Paris is dying to know!

Lorelai is imagining that she hears the termites. She tries to get Rory to go stay at Sookie’s. The power of suggestion – now Rory hears them.

Sookie is happy to have her girls over. Milkshake time! Jackson turns out to be hiding in the closet – Sookie didn’t want Rory to feel uncomfortable. Jackson is wearing PJs covered with pics of him wrestling in high school.

Mrs. Kim thinks Rory is a carrier of termites. Paris has Madeline call Rory to pretend to be doing a story on PSAT scores.

Richard is still working, to tie up loose ends after quitting. Lorelai makes the mistake of saying she has a tension headache, which Emily digs into. Lorelai won’t say why, but Rory tells Emily about the termites. Emily immediately wants to give Lorelai money for it, but Lorelai refuses. Lorelai is incredibly mad at Rory for bringing it up. And yells at her.

Rory talks to Dean about the fight, who comments about the Gilmore stubbornness. Lane is a cheerleader! When she sees Rory, she just looks away.

Emily has made an appointment for Lorelai with the president of the First National Bank. Lorelai doesn’t even want that favor from her mother.

Lane didn’t want to tell Rory about being a cheerleader for fear of judgement. Neither can be overly civil about the lying.

Luke comes over to give a second opinion on the termites. He offers to set her up with a contractor and tells her she can pay in installments. Except, it turns out that he’d be paying and she’d pay him back. She won’t accept his loan either.

Lorelai, with no choices, goes to the bank appointment. Emily is there – plans on going to the meeting too. At which Lorelai promptly leaves. Emily tells her that her pride is getting in the way. Lorelai agrees to go in if Emily agrees not to talk. Lorelai asks the President to treat her as he would any other client. Apparently, Lorelai has taken out two previous loans on her house. Looking at her whole record, he denies her the loan. Though, he does suggest having someone co-sign the loan. Lorelai grudgingly asks Emily to co-sign.

Lorelai asks her mother what she owes her now – Emily basically tells her to shut up. That she just wanted to do something nice for her daughter.

Taylor makes the basketball team show their new uniforms – in the freezing cold winter weather. Lorelai makes peace with Rory – she says she wants the right to make mistakes and fix problems without interference. The cheerleaders come out – and Lane is at the forefront. Rory goes to compliment Lane after.

Emily gives Lorelai the silent treatment. Lorelai apologizes for doubting Emily’s motives. And… there’s the string. DAR meetings will now be at the Inn.

  1. Claire says:

I think this is a great episode because it shows just how independent Lorelai is!

  2. barbara_Portugal says:

oh!!! the termites episode! i´ve always loved this one! my favourite part is where madeleine calls rory for paris. hilarious! =P

  3. Jessica King says:

I was laugh so hard that Paris was so mad and want know what Rory get for her PSAT scores so badly at lunch and Paris is so funny this episode.
Lauren is pretty good emotion with so mad this episode. When Lorelai and Rory are fight over about not listen what Lorelai said about she dont want Emily loans for her house from termites.

  4. Sara says:

I think Emily probably knew that she would be co-signing the loan, but I don’t think she did it in a malicious way. I honestly believe that she just wanted to help Lorelai. Most of the time, we’re mad at Emily for being mean to Lorelai so it was nice to see an episode where Emily was just trying to be helpful and not expecting anything in return.

  5. Michelle says:

Eh, Sara, not expecting anything in return?? What about the DAR meetings being at the inn? I still thinks it nice of Emily, but she most definitively has ulterior motives, she is always trying to get more involved in the girls’ lives, and having the DAR meetings at the inn is a ploy to see Lorelai and by proxy) Rory more often. You can hardly blame her though, at heart she is still a loving mothing and grandmother (even if she is manipulative and controlling, she does very much love them).
In the discussion points above Adrianna asks “Lorelai owns her home – how can she be worth nothing to the bank? And how did she expect to finance the Inn? “. Lorelai has two previous loans on the house already, if they give her another loan ihe house wll probably be worth less than what she owes on the loans if it was taken of her and sold by the bank, in other words the collateral is worth less than whet she owes, so it not a safe loan. I’m probably not using the correct terms as I’m not american, but that’s basically her problem in a nutshell.
Getting a loan on an inn is enteriely different matter, you get it on the strength of a businessplan, the location and whether there is a market for your business in the place where you are opening it up. Plus it won’t just be her, it’ll be Lorelai and Sookie going into business together. Whether a personal or business loan is granted are bassed on different criteria.

  6. Pamela says:

I agree w/Sara – Emily was truly trying to help Lorelei and the DAR thing – so what – the Inn is in the business of hosting events, why not hers.
Lorelei and Emily are so much alike in their efforts to control situations it is almost painful to watch them sometimes, but this time it was great to see because they both won. Besides, I loved it when Lorelei said “she’s good” regarding her mother’s DAR comment.

  7. Pamela says:

Also, the scene where Mrs. Kim was shooing Rory away from her Antique Shop with the water hose was hilarious – with her being afraid of termites entering in her shop w/all the wood furniture.

  8. Agie says:

i love at the beginning of the episode, they look all happy, and the look of “life is good”. the music plays as if things are good. and lorelai steps outside and BAMMM! her foot goes through the porch! i laugh everytime!

  9. Maddie says:

PSAT-riffic! hehe, that makes me laugh every time!

and i love when louise is counting out her fritos because she can only have a certain number. hilarious. :)

  10. Karen says:

Emily was only kidding about the DAR meetings. She just said it to get one up on Loralei and that is why after she said it Loralei says “she’s good”.
Also in regards to the loan on the Inn, Michelle is correct but the property also has value so that too would be considered collateral against the loan.

  11. nina says:

i don’t think she was joking about the DAR meeting. i never really thought about it that way…but i dunno

  12. mandaa says:

ok this episode goes to show how smart rory is! those psat scores are amazing. And it is truly kind of rory to not tell paris her scores, despite how it annoys paris. Rory knows that if she tells paris that she got a better score, paris will FREAK!

  13. Anna says:

Question: why the hell Sookie puts Jackson in the closet? Why doesn’t she keep him in the bedroom or make him change his clothes?!
