Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

Winter Festival Snowman Contest – Lorelai and Rory have a unique snow woman. But are competing against the Michaelangelo of Snowmen. The head falls off theirs.

Sookie and Lorelai are preparing for the Bracebridge Dinner for a special group party – a recreation of a 19th century meal with servers in period clothing, musicians, and amazing food. And the squire, who sits on a raised platform and makes pronouncements – and who is, by the way, Jackson. He just didn’t know it yet. And they ignore his attempts to back out. Chris calls to ask if Lorelai will let Rory visit him for a couple of days.

Richard is still in a funk and has cancelled their regular Winter vacation. He is being sensitive about any slight.

Sookie is training her staff in Old English. Lorelai breaks the news that the Bracebridge group who were to come for this big event are snowed in. Dinner is cancelled. Sookie ‘smad’ – mad and sad. The event is pre-paid, but still they are all sad. They decide to throw the dinner anyway. And to invite everyone they know to stay at the Inn.

Dean breaks up a fight between Jess and some other kid. But Jess just turns on him.

Rory spots a photo Christmas card from Chris & Sherry that Lorelai didn’t tell her about. Rory suggests inviting her grandparents to the shindig to cheer up Richard. When Rory leaves, Lorelai flips over the picture of Chris & Sherry.

The night of the Bracebridge Dinner, Paris drops off newspaper stuff for Rory. Rory invites Paris to stay for dinner. Dean gets annoyed to see Jess there. Sookie is nervous in the kitchen. Richard and Emily show up in good spirits. Emily tells the girls that Richard has been in high spirits for 2 days.

Lorelai welcomes her guests and tells them a special treat is outside – a line of horse drawn sleighs for them all. Dean takes his sister, which Jess takes note of. Lorelai asks Luke to join her sleigh. After talking about the ‘horse’s hiney’, Lorelai says how magical the town looks. Luke is his tart self, but warms up talking about how things are going with Jess. Luke has found the secret of parenting!

“You visualize the future you want. And then, if necessary, you lie to bring it about.”

Jess’ mom has not called about his time off from school, so Luke told Jess that he thought it best for Jess to stay while he’s still adjusting and that his mom was upset about it. Lorelai tells Luke that Jess did not buy it – he knows.

Richard gets frisky with Emily in their sleigh. And says he wants to take Emily on a rollercoaster – he’ll hold her hand. It’s sweet.

Rory is the last to get in her sleigh. As the sleigh moves off, Jess jumps in. Rory is miffed about fighting with Dean, but Jess blows it off and says he does not need anyone jumping in on his fights. Rory asks Jess why he’s still in Stars Hollow over the break, if he hates it so much. Jess knows his mom does not want him home. He compliments Rory’s snow-woman – Bjork inspired, and he knew it!

Jess asks what she and Dean talk about – does he know Bjork? Rory has shown Dean stuff. This seems very teacher-student to Jess. Rory cannot specifically say what she and Dean talk about. Jess says that Dean does not seem like Rory’s kind of guy. Jess finds it hard not to smile as Rory gets defensive.

Luke and Jess puzzle at their food. But the dinner goes well. Richard charms the crowd with his stories. After Taylor compliments Richard on not being a dull insurance man, Richard says he’s glad to be rid of the ‘dull lot’. He is now retired. Which silences the conversation, and the happiness between Richard and Emily.

Lorelai snuck the ugly baby picture into Rory’s bed. Rory asks if Lorelai has heard from her dad. Lorelai admits that Rory was invited but is angry – Lorelai has dibs on this time of year with Rory. And the thought of Rory hanging with her ‘practically’ step-mother angers her. Lorelai admits to overreacting and being possessive.

Emily comes to ask for another room – she is too angry to speak to Richard. Hurt that he didn’t tell her. Thinks he didn’t realize that it affects her too. Funny moment when Lorelai and Emily put on their moisturizer the same way. Emily still rants while going to bed – sharing their room. Lorelai tries to help by saying Richard had no choice but to retire – the job was killing him.

Emily goes for a walk but finds Richard also up in the living room. He asks to talk. Richard had talked to the CEO about the rumors and how unhappy he’d become. Detailing his years of service to the company, he became angry. And heard himself resign. The CEO was stunned. As was Richard. But was also thrilled – elated. A weight was lifted. Richard says he knows he’s done nothing but make Emily unhappy in the last months – jeopardized friendships, cancelled engagements. And, knowing that Emily liked order, he couldn’t face Emily with disappointing her for un-planning their future. He didn’t want to fight or worry. But be happy, especially at that time of year.

Richard details their financial situation, some of which changes because he quit instead of retiring. Emily’s forgiveness is clear when she says they should just go to bed. All is well in the Gilmore world.

After kissing Dean goodbye the next morning, Rory catches Jess smirking at her. She smiles nervously. And Dean notices.

Rory and Lorelai drive home in the sleigh – and see that Ringer Guy’s fancy snowman has been destroyed. They win by default.

I never thought Dean wasn’t smart enough for Rory until I saw Jess. They were enjoyed the same music and movies. They could get each other to try out new books and learn to like new authors which I really enjoyed seeing. All we ever saw with Dean was when Rory would convince Dean to read one of her books. We never saw him encouraging her to try something new. I always felt like Dean wasn’t good enough for Rory. She needed someone who was just as smart as her.

I’m agree with Sara, because Jess is very smart and very good skill read book for new authors like what Rory does. But not same with Dean, cuz he is very dull and he not learn read book, but Rory focus him to read her book anything.I just feel that Dean not good enough for Rory.

I love that part of Luke and Lorelai just sit and chat during sleigh ride with the horse.

Why does Lorelai pick Luke for her sleigh ride? Why not Rory? Because she has a thing for Luke and Rory wasn´t there… I mean why does she want to take a ride alone in the first place? And not with Lorelai?…

Does Jess think Dean is not smart enough for Rory? Is that true? He might think that, but I guess he meant that Dean just doesn´t read that much as Jess does and maybe that Rory and Jess would have more to talk about then Rory and Dean do…

Why didn’t Lorelai tell Rory about Chris’ invitation? Hasn’t she always encouraged Chris to be more active? Yes but I think she didn´t tell Rory because she was jealous about Sherry. I guess she was just afraid that Rory would spend a week or longer with them and after that she´d like Sherry a lot. That´s why she didn´t tell Rory.

Do you think Rory is rethinking her relationship with Dean? Is this the first time she sees Jess in a new way? She definitely rethought the fact that Jess and her might have a bit more in common concerning the whole book thing than she does with Dean. And I also think she sees him in a new way (but she´s been seeing him in another or new way for much longer…)

This was absolutely one of my most favorite Gilmore Girls episodes – it ranks neck in neck with the Episode where she invited the townies for a dry run at the Dragonfly Inn and Digger Styles showed up to put a monkey wrench in her “new” relationship with Luke.

Just a comment on the recaps – you do a GREAT job. Did you do this when GG was in its first run? I would’ve loved to have discovered this show in real time!

Would be great to get some audio soundbites or whatever you call them of some of each episodes more memorable “quips” from the characters.

ANYONE out there know the name of the Christmas song/artist that was playing at the end of the “Forgiveness” Christmas episode they showed yesterday on ABC Family?? A good one that I would like to download. Happy Holidays

Thanks! Yes, I did these in real time too, though I did the pictures separately and the recap live with the show. I will try to find some video clips to put in – I am afraid I don’t have the time to make all new ones. Each recap takes a couple hours of my day :)

    * Why does Jess turn on Dean? –I think he saw it as an easy shot and just took the opportunity. Here he is in this little “rinky-dink” town, he’s kind of got a “past” and Dean must seem like such a simpleton to Jess. To me, it was a cheap shot that had frustration an superiority at its base.
    * Rory seems nervous around Jess. Why? –Rory feels the chemistry between them! They connect on a different, more intellectual level than she does with Dean.
    * What has made Richard so happy? Isn’t retiring what he’s dreaded? –I think initially he was just glad to have gone out on his own terms. It was a quick fix that greatly reduced his stress and made him happy.
    * Why does Lorelai pick Luke for her sleigh ride? Why not Rory? –On the surface, I think she chose him because Rory wasn’t around, so why WOULDN’T she ask Luke? Deep down I think (like most everyone else) that she had subconscious feelings for him and couldn’t resist this romantic moment. :)
    * Does Jess think Dean is not smart enough for Rory? Is that true? — YES. Jess looked down on Dean because he was more of a “jock” and a “pretty boy.” I think part of the reason Jess was so mean to Dean was also because he was jealous of Dean for being with Rory (not just because Jess thought he was better or smarter). I think Jess is smarter than Dean as far as book-smarts goes, but Dean is a higher emotional intelligence than Jess.
    * Why didn’t Lorelai tell Rory about Chris’ invitation? Hasn’t she always encouraged Chris to be more active? –If Rory accepted the invitation it would have been a bit of a blow to Lorelai. Rory would get to go stay with Chris and his girlfriend and have that family moment, while Lorelai would be alone. She may have also thought Chris didn’t deserve to have Rory stay overnight because he hadn’t always made an effort to be in Rory’s life.
    * Do you think Rory is rethinking her relationship with Dean? Is this the first time she sees Jess in a new way? –I think the small moments Rory and Jess have together definitely affect the way Rory sees her relationship with Dean. She connects with Jess in a different way, and this intrigues her.
    * Do you think Rory is impressed by Jess’ acts of rebellion? –I don’t know if she’s impressed necessarily. Rory, at her core, is very practical and logical. His acts of rebellion probably seem pointless an stupid to her. However, I think Jess’ general bad boy attitude intrigues her.
