Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:
Luke’s is busy and he is being more gracious, less gruff, with his customers. Lorelai was hiding a Barry Manilow CD. They can’t get out any music preferences from Luke. Lorelai starts speculating if Luke has been dating. Rory and Lorelai make fun of each other’s guilty music choices.
The car is making a bad noise, which by Lorelai’s imitation Rory figures to be the battery. Rory cannot fit all her books in her bag – she has 4 books for reading throughout the day and cannot part with any of them.
That day at lunch, Rory is just settling into her book and music when the guidance counsellor comes to ask to speak with her. She and the headmaster are concerned about Rory’s social behavior – she’s not interacting with other students. Grades are not enough to get high recommendations. Rory denies being a loner. It makes Rory upset, and Lorelai too. Kirk, who is there fixing the car, does not make Rory feel better when insisting he was just like her in school.
Lorelai goes to see the Headmaster and say that there is nothing wrong with Rory. He surprises Lorelai by pulling out a file on her, and saying she’s not an involved parent. ‘Like mother, like daughter’. He gives Lorelai info on parent groups to join. Rather than be too upset, she suggests that both she and Rory go along with it so that Rory gets better recommendations – as distasteful as they may be.
Rory decides to make a first move – and ask to sit at a table with some other girls. They ask her a bunch of questions and Paris, walking by, has a double take. Looks angry. Rory is proud of her success at reaching out.
Paris confronts Rory saying that Rory was sitting with the Puffs – and she wants to know how. Paris says you have to be ‘invited’ to sit with them. The Puffs are the ‘most influential sorority at Chilton’. Paris’ family has a history with the Puffs, and connections with the Puffs last a lifetime. Paris has been sucking up for a year to get in. She asks Rory not to say anything bad about her.
The Gilmore’s are grilling! Emily gets mad at Lorelai for not being involved. Lorelai intends to join the Booster club. She goes to the meeting – they are discussing a fundraiser. They have decided on a fashion show but don’t know where, with what caterer or organizer. Lorelai volunteers her Inn, Sookie and herself. And finds out that they are the models. To cheer herself up, she tells Emily that she is also one of the models. And is guilted into agreeing to it.
Rory is asked to sit with the Puffs again, and anytime she likes. They deny being a sorority – that it’s folklore. Paris comes to eavesdrop and they dislike Paris – but Rory sticks up for her. They think Paris put her up to it, but when Rory says Paris is thinking of joining another non-existant group, they freak – a voluntary defector does not look good to the Puffs. The invite her to sit. Paris looks her thanks at Rory.
It’s the day of the fashion show and Lorelai is running around tying up loose ends – she called in Luke to help fix the runway. Eva from the Booster club is smitten with Luke.
Luke fixes the runway but decides to stick around to make sure it’s stable. Lorelai is really looking forward to that embarrassment. Especially when she discovers that she and Emily are the mother-daughter team. Emily has a ball on the runway – Lorelai looks like she wants to crawl under a rock. Luke and Michel are enjoying it – Lorelai gets into it and does a pose with Emily.
The Boosters thank Lorelai for the best event they’ve ever had. Emily is not proud quite as much as she is ‘satisfied’ – telling Lorelai how well she fits into the world she ran away from. Lorelai sees Luke flirting with Eva. Less happy.
Rory says Lorelai looked like Nancy Regan. Lorelai then tells Rory to look pretty that night – she’s being kidnapped. The Puffs initiation. Rory stays up until she hears them arrive, then fakes sleeping. Poor Paris does not look quite so pretty. They are taken with blindfolds to the Headmaster’s office to pledge, with oath and ringing of the bell, their allegiance. Just as Rory is ringing, the Headmaster and 2 security officers arrive.
The Headmaster is furious and wants to rethink how they teach the students, hand out detention and extra credit… Rory gets annoyed. She stands up and defends herself – that she has friends, but in her own town, and has a routine and good grades. That she sat at a random table (to the astonishment of the Puffs) and did what he told her to. He tells her privately that ‘possibly’ they were hasty to judge in Rory’s case.
Lorelai brings up Eva and how Eva liked Luke and that she assumed Luke was making plans to see her – but that it’d be weird to have Luke date a Chilton mom. He says Lorelai has nerve to tell him who to date – Lorelai storms out. But not before Luke says he was only giving Eva directions. Lorelai still wants the last word, but it’s more comic this time around.
With great satisfaction, Rory goes back to her solitary lunch routine. One of the other to-be Puffs asks to sit with her. They can be solitary together.
