Discussion Questions:

  • Do you think Emily saw Rory as a way to redeem face in her own circle of friends, after missing so many events? Or perhaps even after Lorelai missing her own, because she was pregnant?
  • Do you think Lorelai’s rejection of Chris’ proposal had something to do with him finally settling down, getting a job and a stable life?
  • Why is Richard shunning society?
  • Do you think Lorelai finds this new Chris more desirable? She says she’s warming up to the Volvo… does that represent the new Chris?
  • Why did Chris hide the fact that he was seeing someone?
  • Chris wouldn’t ‘get it together’ for Lorelai – so why for Sherry?

Gilmore Girls Episode Recap & Photos:

The girls go to dinner, only to find Emily and Richard fighting. He has to miss a ‘frivolous’ party of which Emily is co-chair (The Starlight Foundation). So, he turned down this event, and three others, on their behalf. To Emily, being on the board of these foundations and going to their parties is her job. Emily tires to record his arguments.

Rory is nervous about her paper. Luke rushes their breakfast order. Jess was supposed to help – he was late. Uncle Luke makes him change.

Emily realizes how much gossip she’s behind on. Rory comes to the house while Emily is at tea with friends. They ask when Rory’s ‘coming out’ would be and suggest the Daughters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Debutante Ball. They say Emily will be the hit of the ball – with Rory being the prettiest there.

Rory tells Lorelai about the ball – Lorelai thinks Rory will hate it, but Rory is ok with it – and saw how important it was to Emily. The one hiccup is that Rory should be presented by her father – Lorelai asks him. He’s moved to Boston, but is totally happy to come. Was easier to get him to come than expected.

Rory has a plan of her own – by showing Dean a Rock & Roll hall of fame flick with Neil Young in a tux – a way to get him to go with her. In a tux with tails, no less. And gloves.

Chris drives up in a Volvo Sedan – no more motorcycle. And pulls out the Dictionary for Rory that he couldn’t get before. Chris shows Lorelai his car is not all lame – good sound system.

Emily overdid her shopping for Rory, planning out every contingency. Richard, working from home, is very snarky with Emily. Either Emily gets his tux of he won’t go. He doesn’t seem to care about Rory, which is odd.

Miss Patty is teaching Rory and Dean to dance. Rory is not quite a natural. Chris and Lorelai show them how it’s done.

Christ tells Lorelai that he enjoys the stability of his job, surprisingly. He has finally figured out what he wants in life – not his parent’s life. He shows Dean how to tie the bow tie – something he’s learned after dozens of these things. Minus the one where he wore only the bowtie – that was less smart. What with the snow and all.

Lorelai is worried about her parents. Emily has not been calling. Richard doesn’t want to go to Rory’s event.

Rory is all calm before the ball. The other girls have been primping for hours and are very nervous. Rory does not have the pressure of caring about her ‘social status for life’. Or the 4 out of 5 chance of marrying your escort. Lorelai even tries to compliment Emily, but Emily is being critical of everything. And is worried Richard won’t show up.

Lorelai is very happy Chris is there – as is he. Emily and Richard are still arguing, so Lorelai goes to try to get them to sit. Richard is being loud and obstinate. He’s making a scene. Lorelai drags them out into the hallway. He says he’s going through a lot at work. So to hell with society. Apparently, the company took him off an account he had secured. He is being phased out. A heartbreakingly slow process that will make Richard into nothing. Emily tries to encourage him to do other things, but he wants to do what he’s been doing. Rory interrupts to say she’s next.

Rory is presented – she gets a kiss on the hand from her father, does a deep curtsey, and is presented to Dean. Instead of being happy, Emily says:

"That should have been you up there. Nothing’s turning out the way it was supposed to."

Lorelai gives Chris big credit for pulling through for Rory. Lorelai suggests he drop by more often, being closer. She says she is warming up to the Volvo. They kiss. And Lorelai suggests staying a little longer on his visits. Overt hint there. Chris tells Lorelai there is a "someone" to get back to. Sherry is her name, and Chris moved to Boston because of her. They live together.

Rory knows about the girlfriend and is happy that Chris seems so happy. Lorelai agrees – but doesn’t look it. Jess comes downstairs as a mini Luke in plaid and backwards cap. Definitely grates on Luke’s nerves, so he sends Jess up to change again.

Lorelai is worried about Emily. Lorelai has Rory to complain to when anything bothers her, but Emily has nobody. So, Lorelai pays Emily a visit the next day. And lets her know that she can talk to her, anytime. Emily just says ok – but not in a mean way.

  1. Tucker says:

I laughed my head off when Jess was wearing the flanel and hat. So so good.

One of the few episodes I liked Chris.

  2. Steff says:

This episode made me sad. It was both sweet with the whole ball thing but also sad.
And have a question. Why did Lorelai kiss Christopher??? Was that kind of a friend like kiss or a serious kiss???? I was confused about that, can you please help me???? Thanks :)

  3. Arieanna says:

I think she was serious – I think she saw the Christopher she’s always been waiting for.

  4. Mary says:

Always liked this episode, it has lots of great lines and memorable scenes. The scenes with Luke and Jess (the Metallica t-shirt, and Lorelai saying gross t-shirt great band), then Jess dressing up like Luke and cleaning up perfectly. It is priceless. And, the debutante ball, when the women say Rory will be the prettiest, because one girl fell off her horse and has a scab on her face…And, Rory accepting to go because it was important to Grandma and not important to her.
Emily buying 12 pairs of panty hose for Rory…
Lorelai dancing with Christopher at Miss Patty’s and Rory saying Ok I’m adopted. Then Lorelai saying lets get out of here before you become Miss Patty’s next husband. Lauren Graham made the dancing look so smooth and simple.
The Ball was great and Lorelai looked the best in her dark purple dress. And, the Grandparents fighting the whole time. Dean tells Rory she looks like a cottonball.
This episode showed how much work meant to Richard and it was his whole identity and purpose for 30 years. For him not to enjoy Rory, shows what a crisis he was going through, in his mind.
It, always made me sad to see Lorelai and her mother at the end of the episode. Lorelai saying she is here for her Mom, if she wants to talk. And, there is just silence. Seeing, how, they just don’t know how to communicate. It is just sad….

  5. barbara says:

i love seeing young alexis bledel. lauren graham is pretty much the same…

  6. Jessica King says:

The episode was sad,but good.I dont like that Christopher thown coffee in trash from Luke, when he said that different taste good thing from chief Boston coffee.I love that part of Jess wear same Luke’s uniform and hat then make me laugh, that funny.I like that part of Lorelai come over her mother’s house after her busimeet class and stay here for her,if Emily can talk to her.

  7. Steff says:

Thanks Arieanna. I think so too. To me it seemed very serious and that´s why I don´t like Christopher (especially in this episode) because he is playing with Lorelai´s feelings! He shouldn´t have let her kiss him. But he did, I think he did it to make her jealous because of Sherry!! Gosh I hate him for doing that, it´s so not fair!!!

  8. Mary says:

I agree about Christopher, that he was trying to make Lorelai jealous. I think Lorelai kissed Christopher because he appeared to getting his act together. And, they were at the ball, and she was remembering when she was 16, and her feelings for him back then.

  9. Pamela says:

I don’t think Chris is playing w/LG feelings. After all, last time he was there he did ask her to marry him, didn’t he? She turned him down and now that he seems to have settled down it’s too little, too late to Lorelei. Timing is everything.

The Jess scene w/flannel shirt and hat was a hoot.

I believe Richard was starting to feel the adverse effects of his demise in the business world and found all this fancy schmancy stuff odious and superficial, especially when his business life is threatened. Unfortunately, Emily just doesn’t get it.

  10. Rosebery says:

Hi I think Lorelie should have gone off with Luke, at the end of the day, but at the end of the day it was a really good drama and I love it all, especially Lorelie (lauren Graham) and Rory.
